Malaria: fatality risk and treatment?

someone i know recently was hospitalized for having malaria. he has the most severe strain and is being transfered to another hospital which has the intravenous treatment that he needs. with this treatment and proper observation what is the risk of fatality?

i ask because stats say 20% fatality, but i live in canada and would assume that due to a 1st world health care system, the fatality rate be a lot less when compared to a worldwide statistic

The type of malaria you are likely talking about is likely caused by Plasmodium falciparum. The death rates of 20%sound like they are for untreated malaria. In the United States, the mortality rate is somewhere around only 1 %.

This article gives a lot more information on it, looking at cases reported in Germany.
