Can Magnesium supplements be harmful?

For years I suffered with painful menstrual cramps, until I started taking Magnesium supplements. Starting with a week before my period starts, I take one 250mg pill a day. But the first day of my period, which is the most painful, I take about three or four 250mg pills.

It is the only thing that has helped, but I everytime I take one, I worry that it might have bad effects. I get a really bad feeling that it is not as safe as I heard, but it is better than when I was ODing on painkillers.

What are some facts on Magnesium?

Magnesium is a natural choice to relax muscles (it works in tandem with calcium which stimulates contraction - actually it competes with calcium). The safe upper limit for magnesium is 1500mg (3 x 500mg) so you are within the safe range. Healthy kidney function excretes magnesium efficiently, with little possibility for any toxic buildup.

Have you considered trying to prevent the cramps rather than treat the symptoms as they appear?

I have 2 females friends who used to suffer from painful menstrual cramps but no longer do. One is the manager of an elite health club here in Bangkok. They both use a particular multi ingredient health supplement which contains specialized nutrients which act as natural hormonal precursors. These help to re-balance the hormonal cascade. If your hormones are working incorrectly, or are depleted, symptoms such as monthly menstrual cramps appear.

Too much can be harmful. But how much is too much? Take a look at the article and chart put out by the US Government. http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/magnesi... It says that adults shouldn't take more than 350 mg a day of magnesium.
