Magnesium dosage for palpitations and anxiety? Should I add calcium?

I have had benign heart palpitations for years. Magnesium seems to help. I don't take it all the time. I am wondering what the optimum dosage is for a 33 year old non pregnant woman with anxiety and palpiations would be? Also, should I add calcium with the magnesium as a complement, or should I add some other minerals? I can't take any herbs because I do take some prescription meds that they may interfere with. Yes, I have seen a doc regularly. There just seems to be some disagreement in the alternative medicine community about a good and safe dosage. I don't mind the diarrhea, I do get it with mag supplements and it isn't bad. Thanks for any help!

I'm looking for a person knowledgeable in alternative medicine, most traditional MDs are not; I was married to one so I have firsthand experience with that!

Yes, calcium should be combined with magnesium. But B12 + Folic Acid are necessary for pregnant women and will help with the baby's formation AND this helps with your anxiety.

Homeopathy can help as it most likely will not have side effects. And because you are taking prescription medication, homeopathic remedies won't interact with certain meds, thus making it safe to use.

Make sure you're drinking enough water because dehydration can cause palpitations and anxiety as well. Taking a good prenatal vitamin formula would be a good idea. Make sure you take ones that are used under the direction of a health professional and not the ones found on store shelves...
Super Matragen and Maxum Matragen are excellent formulas from Genestra.
Metagenics formulations are high quality natural products that will help you too.

By the way, you don't want the diarrhea to prevent dehydration. So back to the magnesium and calcium...the optimal ratio could be1:2 or 2:1....it would depend on what your body needs.

Wishing you all the best and congratulations!

********I'm sorry, for some reason I thought I read pregnant...but it's non-pregnant. Let me adjust the advice:

B12 +Folic Acid is still necessary to take even when not pregnant. This does help with the situation you described.

Taking a multi-mineral formula to help adjust blood-sugar levels works to help alleviate depression and anxiety. Make sure your diet consists of dark leafy greens (to help build build iron as anemia can be a factor), complex carbs, protein, and a lot of water.
Vitamin D is necessary and Omega 3.

There's obviously more information to give but there needs to be more information of your situation to give more well-rounded suggestions.

Again, I apologize if I confused you or anyone else. I didn't notice the 'NON' pregnant statement.

Uh, only your doctor is qualified to tell you that. Talk to him.

You can safely take 600 mg of magnesium (Mg) every day and 1,000 mg of calcium (Ca) every day.

Mg and Ca are both alkaline earth metals and interact so if you get too much of one it may be absorbed preferentially at the expense of the other one and you could end up deficient in the other one.

The ideal ratio of Mg to Ca in our bodies is 600 to 1,000 or 3 to 5 and this is actually the ratio of Mg to Ca in dolomite which is a mixture of carbonates of Mg and Ca in the ratio 3 to 5.
