What is mad cow disease is there mad pig disease and stuff to? There is not a mad pig disease (yet anyway) Mad cow disease is a brain disease of cows caused by prions. There is a similar disease of sheep called scrapie and a disease in humans called Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease. They are all fatal Mad cow disease is a prion disease. A defective protein makes normal cell proteins into prions and slowly turns brain cell into spongy looking masses. This is a contagious disease, occuring when a peron is eating meat from a cow, infected with a mad cow disease. There were incidents in tanzania, with cannibalism, called kuru-kuru, there is a hereditary counterpart of this also, called CJD, but it is extremely rare.If I am not mistaken, the disease became especially widespread, when animals were fed with remains of animals with prions int heir organisms (i know it is gross!!). |
