The disease is caused by a strange protein called a Prion and it causes a unique death to neurons in the CNS. It basically makes the brain look like a sponge hence name. It can be transmitted to humans if humans eat cow brains. The disease in humans is called Crutchfield Jakob (sp. maybe wrong) disease. The latency period can be 7 years or longer.
