What is the likely-hood of getting Mad Cow disease from beef? |
I lived in Italy from 2000 - 2001 and might have consumed a bit of the italian beef...and thought of asking the question above..any advice would be helpful :) Actually, CJD (Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, pronounced kroitzfeld yakob) is unrelated to mad cow/BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy). Variant CJD or vCJD is thought to arise from eating BSE-tainted beef. Most data is available for the UK epidemic. I don't know the extent of contamination in the Italian beef supply, but less than 200 vCJD cases have been identified and only one of those is in Italy. While prion diseases can incubate for several years or decades, so cases are still being identified even though the beef supply has been cleaned up, odds are very strongly in your favor. A lot higher than getting Mad Cow from a chicken. ;) It is a rare disease - so probably slim chances. In the USA it goes by another name and when you go to donate blood they ask you if you or a family member has been diagnosed with Cripshaw Jacobs disease - that is probably spelled wrong - but it is still a spongy form encephalitis and we get it from wild game meat. Do some research you will be stunned. The chances are very slim that you have it. |
