Why cant I give blood?

Is this right?
I cant give blood because I have had an operation since 1980.
Therefore I supposedly could have all sorts of blood diseases like mad cow disease or something.
The people that have been helped are the ones that want to help the most, why the blanket ban and not testing a sample before allowing them to give blood.
At this rate, blood donors will run out because anyone who recieves blood after 1980 cannot give blood ever.

Did you receive a blood transfusion during the operation? If so, that will prevent you from becoming a blood donor, I'm afraid.

There are plenty of people who have had operations, but who didn't need transfusions (myself included). We can still donate with no problems.

The number of people who have received blood transfusions (for any reason) is very small, compared to the total population of Britain.

thats wrong cause then ppl complain about not having any bllod to give people.. they have lost their freakin minds.. sry..

no i had an operation 2 years ago and i can give blood, u cant give blood if u have had a trasfusion since 1982, and u cant give blood for a year after having an operation a peircing a tattoo bieng pregnant and having a baby

strange i thought they would just test you before hand or ask for some sort of medical evidence that you have no blood conditions

I think it would probably cost them too much to run all the tests. I agree with you though, that they're way too picky for not having many donors. I get turned away because of low iron all the time, when really it should be my choice as to whether I'm willing to go slightly anemic for a short period of time afterwards.

what is going on is fear and lack of knowledge.
the majority of operations in the USA are germ free and carry no real pathogens or germs to prohibit giving blood.
unfortunately, the center for disease control and other
offices that genuinely seek to protect us, can, screw thing up a little when not necessary. think safety for the masses first.
i would seek to have a blood bank in your area run a check on
your blood to see if any problems exist.
i know it's a pain, but, blood is indeed deperately needed,
and the test is not that hard to get done.

An operation whereby you was given blood you cant ive blood,and if youve had a blood transfusion you cant give blood but otherwise if it was a bog-standard operation there isnt any reason why you shouldnt be able to..<3

i agree with everyone above me, its the transfusions not the operations that prevent you from doing a noble deed.

im like you only im not allowed to donate any body fluid. thanks to the staff at the pittsburgh plasma donation center. i was supposedly to have hepatitis c, i got tested and came back negative. i went to talk to them they said ive been entered in a national do not donate registry. what really irks me, is that they got my file mixed up with someone else of the same name, but of different address, social security number and middle names. possibly age too.

I gave blood for the third time recently. I always read the boring welcome pack properly, and the questions that you have to tick and I don't recall anything about not being able to donate if you've had an operation since 1980 - or an operation at all in fact. There was a lot of stuff about not being able to donate if you've EVER been given money or drugs for sex or if you've even EVER had sex with someone who has (like you quiz people about these things before sleeping with them) which I thought was pretty extreme, but I'm quite sure having an operation doesn't come into it.

I don't know where you come from but if it's the UK you can check www.blood.co.uk for the number to contact to find out if you can donate or not. I would just check with the people who take the stuff, wherever you are, before assuming you can't donate.

I think you read it wrong. it used to be if you had a blood transfusion before like 1974 because they didn't test for disease before that
