Why doesn't gastric acid destroy prions?

I am under the impression that the primary function of gastric acid is to break down proteins. If that is the case, then shouldn't prions (i.e. mad cow disease) be destroyed by simple digestion along?

the problem is that the etiologic agent such as a virus may survive gastric acid.
