Do you know how to ward off macular degeneration?

My eye doctor says Centrum Silver will keep it at bay.

Lutein

My 90 yo father called all his children to warn us that we were genetically disposed to get macular degeneration, as he'd just been diagnosed with it. Not so, I said. It is caused by an imbalance, a deficiency. Soon after, he began taking a balanced supplement with a high dose of lutein, & his sight had already begun to improve when he went for his next eye exam...
When choosing a supplement, read the label carefully.
Stay away from fillers, & phosphates...

(One time my spouse bought a bottle of MSM capsules at Walmart for me... When I opened one & tried to dissolve the MSM in water, it was water resistent! It was worthless. I suspect that it had aluminum in it to keep it from caking, but why, when it was encapsulated? Don't trust cheapies. Ask advice, ask for the purest ones to pick from. Or, start including foods that contain a good amount of lutien regularly in your diet! (;)

'We get what we pay for', and our health is of high priority, so Ask at a good Health Food Store. Some of their people are trained for helping their customers. Report It

I never buy supplements from a drug/grocery/department store. You never know whether it's really the brand it says, or a cheap version of it, or something that was stored improperly, & may have lost is's umph or otherwise gone bad. Report It

Lutein & Zeaxanthin
http://mdsupport.org/library/l... :

"Daily amounts of 'L & Z' are generally recommended at 20 mg lutein & 6-10 mg zeaxanthin. Lutein is easily available on the market in the recommended amount, either alone or as part of several brands of multi-supplements." Report It

Then you should take your Dr's. advice. Continue regular eye checkups.

As there are several types of macular degeneration, I'll assume that you are meaning age relate( over 60?). I know that there can be other causes as well, so you do need to know the cause. I have included a link from Med line that has many links to help answer your question. There are also clinical trials.
Best wishes

Nutrition therapies are helpful in slowing the progress of dry macular degeneration. It does not help with wet macular degeneration which is the worst form. Dry macular degeneration will become wet in time, which is why you want do everything possible to slow the process. Once the degeneration becomes wet, there are surgeries that can slow the process again but these are not feasible for every patient.

Another good eye vitamin is Ocuvite by Baush & Lomb. It has lutein, which is good for the eye. My eye doctor said to take it. It can't hurt you and it just may save your eyesight someday. Pretty good deal when you can just buy it at Walmart for $10 or so.
