If MDMA is legalised would people be happier?

When I say MDMA I mean the shortened medical name for the illegal drug known as ecstasy. I am curious as I have been thinking how the world may have turned out in the last 200 years if the only legal drugs were not alcohol and tobacco. Alcohol being a depressant that is currently most widely used for so called socialising although it seems to do more to keep people anti-socialising.

Where as, when MDMA is pure and of pharmaceutical quality, is a stimulant that often brings people together to enjoy themselves who may never have talked under the influence of alcohol.
So many people are on SSRI anti depressants, but if we were allowed legally to enjoy ourselves on MDMA every now and again maybe the need for these SSRI drugs would decrease. We would be able to let go for 1 night rather than staying on a drug that can't be any less dangerous than MDMA for years.
I am aware that anti depressants have been tested more than MDMA and that they are not the same.

Please only answer if you are talking about pure MDMA as it would be sold legally without the effects of mixing it with alcohol.

If used correctly and in moderation it think clean cut ecstasy would be a great alternative to alcohol. The love , compassion , and euphoria you obtain through this drug is unexplainable. Using it every weekend like the user stated above is dangerous and shouldn't be used as a reasonable answer. He abused the drug and even with abuse of alcohol it can lead to worse consequences. So my answer yes MDMA is a safe drug if used in small moderation and not abused but with the euphoria included and if it was legalized i would see a problem with people becoming addicted to the feeling itself.

Have you not seen people violent on these drugs because i have drugs are illegal for a reason. Drugs that are tested by phamacuitical companies are not allways safe!

Some people would be happier, but since such a temporary high that can cause trauma, it would be a very small amount of people. Some people would replace natural happiness with drugs, causing a feedback loop where they were only happy when high regardless of stimuli

Just FYI: they began to outlaw certain drugs around 100 years ago.

MDMA Actually damages brain serotonin neurons. It also has some nasty psychological effects too such as.... confusion, depression, sleep problems, anxiety, and paranoia during, and sometimes weeks after, taking the drug.
Physical effects can include muscle tension, involuntary teeth-clenching, nausea, blurred vision, faintness, and chills or sweating. Increases in heart rate and blood pressure are a special risk for people with circulatory or heart disease.

So in theory it's a good idea but not in practise because it can actually make you more depressed.

can people who have actually took ecstacy comment plz.Anyways NO its a horrible drug.I used to take it every weekend when iwas 18 it was great at the time but it ***** with your brain just like most other drugs do.Its the long term effects it can have on you.I stoped taking it and it made me go carzy for a while and ill never touch that **** again.

Originally the pure stuff, not the crap sold on the street was made for counseling sessions between couples as part of couples therapy. I have never tried it so I do not know if it would make society a better place or not. I think that if it did what those studies suggested that it would be of more use to couples then alcohol.

I can't say I know because I have never taken it personally. But I have seen the behaviours of those who have, and it HAS killed people has it not?

I think the problem is, any of these drugs are like sticking plasters on gaping wounds. It doesn't solve the problem really does it? If you are that unhappy with yourself, with your life that you NEED to take recreational drugs, alcohol or even prescription "legal" drugs you do so for a reason...

Taking medication isn't solving the root cause because its not helping anyone address the under laying issue. I hope that in this day and age, GPs and Psychiatrist no longer dish out pills willy nilly and people get the therapy and support to address the CAUSE.

It seems to me that the root cause of much misery, despair and unhappiness are things like lack of self esteem, high expectation about how one "should" feel, look, be. Lack of meaning and purpose in life, possibly due to the lack of religion in society these days. lack of identity. High unemployment or long hours for rubbish pay; poverty the contrast between the "have's" and the "have not's". Poor physical health and housing, lack of equality and justice. Many people feel disempowered and there seems to be a complete lack of "neighbourliness" these days.

When you come down from the drug what ever it was that drove you to take them is still there and still have to be dealt with. It would be far more proficient to teach people how to have self esteem, along with developing coping skills and an ability to ask for help when you need it instead of trying to muddle along when out of your depth.

talking about alchohol and drugs, i have wondered why drugs and alchohol dont both have the same restrictions, alchohol can devastate lives ,yet its so easy to obtain.

after taking xtc you will get depressed. if you come up you have to come down. i agree that alcohol causes more harm to our society but replacing it with another drug is not really the answer. I believe alcohol should be a class A drug. It causes so many lives to be destroyed and in so many ways. No one has ever died from smoking hash yet it is illegal, although research shows it can cause mental health problems.

I dont think its the way to go to be honest.

Why do we need chemicals to be happy?
