Could airbag cause my condition? Doctors or medical professionals please??

I am a previous breast cancer patient. I had a lumpectamy and several nodes removed. I have been cancer free, and no signs of lymphedema for the last 6 years. In may last year I was in a car accident. Both airbags in my vehicles deployed. When I came to my thumb, hand, arm, chest, etc were severely swollen and bruised. Within weeks I was diagnosed with now having lyphedema. Although I've gone through a year of physio, manual drainage, wear sleeves, minimal use of arm I cannot seem to get my arm back to normal. Do you agree with me that the impact brought on my lymphedema? For insurance purposes I need a doctor/doctors to substantiate this. No one seems to want to admit the airbags could have done this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Until I get some info....no one will help me with expenses from physio, sleeves, etc. Thank you in advance!

As a physical therapist who treats people with lymphedema, there is usually some precipitating factor when a woman has undergone breast cancer surgery with removal of lymph nodes. After surgery, women are informed that they should keep the arm well protected from cuts, burns, insect bites, etc. Of course, an exaccerbation of the cancer could also cause the problem, so it is always wise to have this ruled out.

Why it often does not happen until sometime later is because when an injury occurs, our body releases chemicals and proteins to help "clean up" the affected area. When our immune systems is finished with this "clean-up", our lymphatic system assists in the removal of these substances. When the lymphatic system has been compromised (as in your case), this is often enough to trigger a lymphedema reaction because the remaining lymphatic system cannot "keep up" with the new injury.

Whether the airbags themselves caused it, or whether it was the seat belt, or impact of the crash itself, we may never know. It appears however, that this incident may have had an impact on your condition.

I heard from someone about a year ago that a lady's implants had burst when the airbag deployed, so I would imagine the force of the airbags could possibly do some internal damage.
Research the topic online.
good luck!
