The lymphatic system is like the "oil filter" of the body. There are lymph NODES strategically placed in the body in such a way the blood must pass through them on the way back to the heart, to collect all the dead blood cells, plaque and other trash it picks up on it's way through the arteries and veins.

Some of the major lymph 'nodes' are in the groin, the armpits and the back of the neck. When there is a lot of 'trash' in the blood, usually from illness or trauma, those lymph nodes filter it out and swell up as a result and it is this swelling the doctor is feeling for as a sign of infection in the body.

I currently have an inflamed lymph node in my neck and getting scans and biopsy done and they cant find out whats wrong - I am perfectly healthy.
