Swollen lymph nodes, what does it mean?

I have a friend who's been sick with some kind of disease, won't tell me what it is. But I did find out that her lymph node(s) in her neck are swollen. What do swollen lymph nodes indicate? Thanks for your help.

What causes swollen lymph nodes?
