Similar to Lyme Disease.. but not!? Doctors don't know what it is? |
A friend of mine was diagnoed with Lyme Disease in November after his vision began deteriorating, memory loss, fatigue, mood swings, and other symmtoms similar to those associated with Lyme Disease began to worsen. After several weeks of treatment for Lyme Disease the Doctors have noticed little or no improvement and have ordered him to discontinue treatment as they do not know what illness he has. Your friend should ask his doctor, or even better, a Rheumatologist, to be checked for MS or Lupus, esp. weakness, fatigue, vision problems, etc....Those two diseases can have very similar symptoms to Lyme Disease. I was first checked for lyme disease but it turned out I had Lupus. I wish him luck and that they find out what it is. Lyme disease tests are notoriously unreliable, the best way is to treat it and see what happens. If symptoms are due to Lyme disease and the appropriate antibiotics are given at a high enough dose, (eg Doxycycline @ 400mg or Amoxycillin @ 3,000mg) the patient will get WORSE first, and THEN improve Report It Have your friend seek a second opinion and get a CT scan or MRI to rule out diseases of the brain. Your friend may still have Lyme disease. After the disease is present in the body for a prolonged period of time, it may not respond to antibiotic therapy. The infection is treated, but the effects will persist because the damage has already been done. If he had Lyme titers checked and they were positive and his symptoms are consistent with Lyme disease, then that may be the cause after all. Of course there are a number of other illnesses and disease processes that may cause similar symptoms. An internist or a neurologist would be a good place to look for further evaluation and investigation into the cause of your friend's symptoms. |
