Lyme Disease question?

I had lyme disease about 4 years ago however during that period I did not feel sick at all. I had about 10 bullseye type rashes on my body and I have heard that If you get lyme disease, you will always have it. More recently I went to a neurologist because I had trouble sitting still at night and he thinks it is Restless leg syndrome. My mom is a nurse and she thinks the lyme disease may have a part in it.

Yes, many folks with Lyme complain about restless leg syndrome. Also, the bull's-eye rashes are diagnostic for Lyme (which means they don't even have to test you to know you have it.) Lyme is known as a "stealth pathogen," which means it can hide out in the body without the immune system knowing it's there.

Now that's it's starting to show up, you need to get to someone with experience treating long-term Lyme. (If you delay, you are probably in for a lot worse symptoms.) Your best bet is a doc affiliated with ILADS (International Lyme and Asssociated Diseases Society.) Depending on where you live, you might have to travel to get to one.

Go to lymenet.com, and look under the "seeking a doctor" section. You can post a message with where you live, and members of the group can notify you of docs in your area.

I also suggest you read up on the ramifications of long-term Lyme. Places to start: lymeinfo.net, lymediseaseassociation.org, ilads.org, betterhealthguy.com, publichealthalert.org.

Good luck!

Lyme Disease Symptoms
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that features a skin rash, swollen joints and flu-like symptoms. You get the disease from the bite of an infected tick. Sometimes it is hard to know if you have Lyme disease because you may not have noticed a tick bite. Also, many of its symptoms are like those of other diseases. Symptoms may include

A skin rash, often resembling a bulls-eye
Fever
Headache
Muscle pain
Stiff neck
Swelling of knees and other large joints
In the early stages, doctors look at your symptoms and medical history to figure out whether you have Lyme disease. In the later stages of the disease, lab tests can confirm whether you have it.

Antibiotics usually cure early stage Lyme disease. If not treated, the disease can cause problems with the joints, heart and nervous system.

I think that if you were treated with antibiotics for the Lyme disease, that should take care of it. However, before treatment there may have been damage that cannot be reversed. Check out www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/lymedisease....

well ah, no. Restless leg and lyme are in now way related, if you were given proper antibiotics then all of the spirochete should have been killed and if done rapidly then you shouldn't have a lot of long term effects. The onlything that can be attributied to old lyme is arthritis in large joints and some cardiovascular problems. So sorry restless leg is nervousness which they basically give you a "tranquilizer" for. For all these people please read up on Restless leg syndrome and remember that this kid presented with a rash which calls for a strong dose of Ab's. Long-term lyme complications are almost a probablility of 0.

Your mom's is right. Since lyme disease affects the nervous system, and electrical signals along the nerves control leg movement, it is quite possible that changes in the neurons caused the Restless leg symptoms.

While it is not necessarily true that you always have it once you get it, the possibility is there. I would most certainly be suspicious of the recent symptoms you are having as they are similar to the types of symptoms my father experienced while having lyme. Listen to your mom and seek out a doctor that has experience dealing with the disease.

While your neurologist may be right, there is a chance he/she is not. Many doctors misdiagnosed my father's symptoms and it ended up costing him some permanent nerve damage. Best of luck.

Lyme disease hides in your body and may never be cured. Tingling in you toes or fingers are symptoms of Lyme and can cause what you are describing. RLS, I know because I've been under treatment for 5 years. Try to find a Lyme Literate Medical Doctor "LLMD". I don't know where you live, but they are hard to find because of how they are regulated.
