Why does pneumonia and other lung diseases cause you to cough up blood? Where is the blood coming from? The interface between your alveoli and the capillaries are only two cells thick. When you have pneumonia or any other type of disease that can cause swelling and irritation the capillaries can leak into the alveoli and bring the blood up into the airways where you can cough it up. Also, as KEE mentioned coughing in and of itself is a forceful and violent act that can sometimes put just enough force on the lung to fracture the tiny blood vessels causing them to leak into the lungs and again up it comes. Don't forget that the carina which is the central cough reflex is right at the bottom of the main bronchial tube and when anything touches it either going down or coming up YOU WILL COUGH!!!! If you take asprin daily or on blood thinners such as Lonenox or Cumadin, this can also contribute as you will not clot as quickly as you would otherwise. Hope that this answered the question. Coughing is a forceful activity. It can cause tiny blood vessels in your lungs to burst from the force of the cough. |
