how would the body compensate to cope with a restrictive and obstructive lung disease? do the compensation have side effects?

Restrictive diseases make up almost all lung diseases. One characteristic of a restrictive lung disease is reduced lung volumes. If you have no other symptoms you may get by just fine however if your intake of oxygen is decreased, your respiratory rate and heart rate may increase to compensate.

The increased respiratory rate may cause you to blow off too much CO2 also know as hyperventilating. This will throw your acid/base balance off.

An increased heart rate will put a little more strain on you heart. This is not good for long periods of time.

Is your restrictive disease acute or chronic?

If the disease results in reduced blood oxygen levels, It attempts to increase lung volume by engaging what are called accessory respiratory muscles to lift and expand the ribcage more.

The ribs become more horizontal, the ribcage expands front to back and side to side, the shoulders blades lift up and make the shoulders more square and muscles on the sides of the neck tend to become taught.

All these changes often lead to episodes of neck, mid back and ribcage pain, but for someone with these diseases, it's not their greatest concern.
