Has anyone had a lumpectomy? I need some advice as I am scheduled for one? |
My apologies for asking such a personal question. However, it is getting closer to the time and I have no idea what to expect. I do know that the lump is not cancer but, it is not a "friendly" lump either. Can anyone shed some light on this for me? I had two benign tumors removed from each breast. A lot depends on your pain level and attitude as to how you will react to the surgery. I also had a radical lumpectomy for a cancerous tumor in 2000 and I am doing great. If you have never had surgery, you will go to the hospital, they'll check you in, have you put on a gown and the latest way is that you sit in a lounge chair and they hook you up to monitors for your blood pressure and such. They will give you a twilight drug to make you calm and groogy. You should be able to have a relative or friend sit with you during this time. When it's time they will wheel you in and put you on the table with your arms outstretched and taped down. Then they will inject your anethsia drug into your IV and when you are under they will put a breathing tube down your throat. Someone is constantly by your side who's only job is to ensure that you are breathing ok and that your vitals are functioning. You won't even realize how much time has passed since you were in the chair and when you wake up. You will go to a recovery room and as soon as you wake up your friend or relative will be there. It is scary but you will come through and when it is over you will look back on it and even have some laughs. Just lean on your friends and relative. You'll be all right. I'm a 7 year survivor. |
