How old do you have to be to get a mammogram?

I had early stages of breast cancer in 94' and had a lumpectomy! - this is no joke but I have massive breasts and I could find 30 lumps if I had too!! - I have been getting dull aches under my right nipple - I want to ask for a mammogram, would I get one?

you have to be fifty + to have a mammogram I had a lumpectomy four years ago i am in remmision.but i still have to go for mammograms and most likely for the rest off my life.your are a high case so you are entitled to have a mammogram when you think there is somthing wrong.go to your doctors and make a appointment she/ he will make a appointment for you at the hospital.dont worry it dosent mean that your cancer has come back because you feel dull aches under your right nipple it could be a number of things. but do get it checked i now how you feel every pain you feel in your breast starts to make you worry but remember that you handle it before and you can handle it again and it could turn out to be nothing. will be thinking of you.best of luck.

yea....go to a doctor...immediately..cancer CAN come back even after surgery

If you had breast cancer in 1994 then you should be getting annual mammograms as you are high risk for recurrence. Get one done ASAP.

Yes, I was 25 when I got my first. It is not always a matter of age but a matter of symptoms that will get you the mammogram.

i think its 20

Tell your doctor about the lumps and he should all but demand that you have one and even give a recommendation for a place to do it.

With this history you should be under continued medical care and yearly ck up if not every 6months. Your doctor should write one for you emediately . Any doctor (or insurance co.) would want you to have one with this history. Also there are specialist that you could see which might suggest a breast reduction for medical reasons at a later date. But get that mammogram emediately. PLEASE do not wait. set up a dr. appo. as we speak.
You must take charge of your body's health.......Doctors and insurance companies are not gods, we must stop treating them as if they have the last word.

They say most women @ about 40 but the earlier the better. I'm 31 & although I should check now I'm not going to stress over it too much since it doesn't run in my family but come 35 I'm getting them & THEN I'm having my tubes tied.

oh my gosh. i am so sorry to here this. I think you have to be 25? but i am not sure.

I think you need to be over 50 to be screened on the NHS but, since you had breast cancer in 1994 I'm sure you can get screened if you're under 50.
Don't wait, contact your GP practise and find out.

Usually older than 30,as it is difficult to do a mammogram on a person with very firm breasts. If necessary, they would do an ultrasound, and then take it from there.

Yes, you can and should get a mammogram. If fact, if you were diagnosed with an early breast cancer over ten years ago, you must be in your thirties by now. Maybe you are even older than that. These are the current guidelines:

"The American Cancer Society and the American College of Surgeons currently recommend that a woman obtain her first baseline mammogram between the ages of 35 to 40. Between the ages of 40 to 50 a mammogram should be done every other year. After the age of 50, a mammogram should be repeated yearly. Women who are at high risk for developing breast cancer may need to obtain mammograms earlier than these recommendations and at more frequent intervals."

If you are 35 or older, you don't even need a doctor's order for a screening mammogram. By federal law, a woman is entitled to a baseline mammogram between the age of 35-40, and a yearly mammogram after that. This is called a "self referral".

A screening mammogram is a procedure done when the woman is not having any symptoms. "Lumpy" breasts are not a symptom, but a condition. If you have a specific problem (for example, a specific lump in your breast), it is called a diagnostic mammogram, and you will need a doctor's order.

It is usually between 40-64 but I am sure they would do it knowing your history.
