Everytime i stand up, i loose my vision. can anyone help?

everytime i stand up, wether or not i have been sitting for half an hour or a few seconds, i loose my vision. it has been happening for a few years new. my vision usually comes back within a minute or so.

im 16, and fairly thin, i eat a healthy diet (thanks to health freak parents) and i DO eat meat. i also take iron tonic because i have low iron levels. i am curious as to whether other people also get this, and if there is anyway to make it stop. i have passed out several times from this also, were my vision doesnt come back and a black out.

i have tried getting up slowly, quickly, looking up, looking down.. but nothing changes it. please help

What's happening is your body isnt keeping up with your position. While you are sitting or lying down your body sets your heart rate and your blood pressure at a certain level to make sure you are getting enough blood to your brain. It does this by increasing or decreasing the heart rate, pumping harder or less and by dilating or contracting peripheral blood vessels - the ones in your arms and legs. When you stand up your body needs to work harder to push the blood up to your head... think of a giraffe - it has a HUGE heart because it has a long way to push the blood against gravity. Something is stopping you from raising your blood pressure and heart rate fast enough to cope with you standing up. The reason you lose your vision is because the blood supply to your eyes and optic nerve is the first thing that's affected. It comes back when your body adjusts to cope with your new position.
It could be a number of things. The most common is anaemia... not enough blood either in volume or number of blood cells. If you have low iron levels anaemia is the most likely. There are other rarer conditions. Consult your Dr and get a blood test. This can also happen if you are tired or unwell, ie getting a bug or you need some food - carbohydrates/ sugar.
In the meantime try not to get up quickly, if you're changing from lying to standing sit on the side of the bed for a while first. There is also a trick that fighter pilots and astronauts use to help with the blood pressure when they're flying and that is to tense up your legs and tummy. So when you get up and feel a bit woozy or your vision starts to go, tense your legs and you wont pass out.

it sounds like you have low blood sugar get to the doctor

go see a doctor..

go see a doctor...sound like either a blood pressure issue or something pressing agains your optic nerves...could be serious, so see a doc...better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your vision.

go see a doctor, you might have a particular condition. eat alot of foods with vitamin A. eat foods with keratin (yellow-colored fruits and veggies)

OO I know what you are talking about.

It happens to me sometimes. It is caused by concentrated your eyes on one spot for too long or not getting a good range of eye movement.

For example, reading a book since you dont get much eye movement, watching tv, going on the computer, etc etc.

If you want this to get better try looking around every once in a while and try not to look at something for too long without looking away, even if you are blinking.

Your vision seems weird after standing up and looking and other things because it is something new you are looking at and your eyes were used to seeing a certain shade of color.

Hope that helped!

Dont stand up.

What are you waiting for? You need to see your doctor ASAP!

I have had that since my teenage years also. Sometimes it is much worse than others. All I can do is tell you what they told me. After plenty of testing and such, they told me that when I go from sitting, or stooping down or sometimes even bending over, to the standing position, my blood pressure drops and causes the loss of vision and sometimes even a ringing in my ears. It can also happen if I go from laying to sitting too. I am now on medication that has helped some.

Go to your doctor and tel;l them what is happening. They will be able to help you.

That could be a stroke warning. See a Dr. right away.

It could be a lack of Vitamin A (beta carotene), or because you have been staring at something too long. Even perhaps an ongoing form of vertigo, or you have low blood sugar.

Go see a doctor, they know what they're doing.

i play violin too. Do you have a shoulder rest? That usually helps.

What you are experiencing sounds like orthostatic hypotension which means that your blood pressure takes a dramatic drop when you stand. Usually this is because of dehyration and/or malnutrition.
I would recommend going to your physician to check on this. When you tell them what is going on, they should take your blood pressure laying, sitting and standing to see how it changes.
To remedy this in the meantime, DRINK MORE WATER and be sure and get at least 1200 calories a day at the very least.
