If you pass out from low blood sugar?

if you were to find someone who has fainted from low blood sugar (not diabetic tho) and just collapsed on the ground, but breathing, what would you do, or what are you supposed to do. is it possible to be passed out and unconcscious but breathing at the same time? anyways you cant give them any sugar because there not awake, so what would you do, besides calling an ambulance. do people who fainted from low blood sugar wake up in a few seconds or minutes like most other people who faint, or do they stay unconscious until they get some sugar. im just curious cause my friend gets low blood sugar a lot.

If someone you know that has diabetes has passed out or is having a seizure :
#1- Call for an ambulance.
#2- Check there blood sugar.Learn to do this simple test.
#3- If the sugar is low give a glucagon injection IM.They may vomit . That is fine.
#4- NEVER EVER give anyone who is not conscious any thing in their mouth.
Do NOT put honey on the inside of their mouths.Do not pour juice down the throat.
#5- Stay with the person until help arrives.

Since your friend has low sugars a lot, he/she should work with their endo and fix that situation. This is no way to live.

You are a kind and thoughtful friend.

Rub honey or syrup on the inside of their cheeks and gum lines. Make sure they don't breathe the sweet stuff into lungs. and have the call in to the paramedics.

You might check their glucose level if you have a glucometer. Be sure to change your lancet before and after checking their glucose.

Make sure you have something for your friend to eat when they get fuzzy and not making sense or staggering!! Something sweet immediately followed by like a protein bar!!

Yes people can pass out from low blood sugar, and an ambulance should always be called. If you are able to get them to wake up you can always give them something to drink like orange juice with sugar in it, or regular soda. But you also want to give them something to eat like a peanut butter sandwich, beause even though giving them something with sugar will help increase there sugar level it is a quick boost, you want to get them something to eat so there sugar doesn't crash down again.

Yes someone can still breath if they pass out (unless it is heart or lung related), as how long they will stay unconscience it is hard to say, depends on the perosn or how low there sugar is.

You would want to monitor them for possible seizure, as that is a side effect from low blood sugar as well. If you are unable to get them to respond, call 911 and rub some honey or cake gel along the inside of their cheek and/or gums. Do NOT try to give an unconscious person liquids. If a person has low blood sugar, they will not wake up the same way a person who just faints does. They DO need to get their blood glucose levels up. If your friend suffers from low blood sugar a lot, you might want to suggest that she carry a snack such as peanut butter crackers with her and for her to remember to eat and snack to where she doesn't go low. Good for you for wanting to help out your friend!!! Hope this helps and take care.

as her friend, carry hard candy with you at all times and make sure she has candy around too. throughout the day have her eat bread or crackers or something with a lot of carbs. carbs are are harder for the body to break down and last longer in the bloodstream. carry a small bottle of honey and some q-tips to rub on the inside of her mouth if she passes out.

monitor her in case she goes into a seizure. i've experienced a girl that passed out in front of me while i was taking her order when i worked at a fast food joint. i took her finger and dipped it in the honey mustad sauce and rubbed her finger around the inside of her mouth. i had to hop over the counter to catch her and sit her down. when she came to i gave her a free meal (2 cheeseburger meal with a strawberry shake). she said it always happens to her but she didn't know what it was. my husband is diabetic and has high blood presure so i always carry his meters. so i took her blood pressure and sugar level and her numbers were low. she was grateful that i was there because everyone else around us hadn't a clue what to do. it helped a lot that my mom is a nurse and my husband has the health conditions he has.

always be prepared. educate others around you and your friend. being prepared can save her life.

Give them some orange juice or some other kind of juice. Call 911 first. You have to be careful if you give them anything solid in the mouth, there is a danger of choking. This is not just fainting, it's called going into insulin shock and can be deadly. Your friend should carry glucose tablets or some hard candy for when she starts to feel the effect of low blood sugar. This can be a deadly situation.

If you find someone who's fainted and is not coming around immediately you call the ambulance no matter what.

If this person is not a diabetic, and has not taken additional insulin (why they would do that, I don't know) then it's unlikely they would pass out from low blood sugar.

But, if I'm wrong and your friend does have a condition where their blood sugar gets so low that they pass out, they should keep a glucagon kit with them, and make sure everyone that they spend any amount of time around knows what it is, what it's for and how to use it. And then an ambulance should still be called even if the Glucagon helps them to come around. Low blood sugar is immediately dangerous and life threatening, so this is important.

--edit--

I just want to add ... with all due respect, Cammie, I believe you are incorrect on one point. My daughter's endocrinologist said that if a diabetic passes out or goes into a seisure they should get the Glucagon immediately without stopping to test blood sugars. The low blood sugars are so dangerous that it's better to just give it to make sure. And since the ambulance is on the way the extra sugar shouldn't do any harm. The rest of your answer is pretty good tho :o) take care.

If someone has low blood sugar, chances are, they are diabetic. Call 911 first thing. But do not sit around and piddle on your butt waiting because there is a time when the body goes too long without sugar (I'd say within 4 minutes of passing out) and you can die. You would get something sweet and give it to them. HOWEVER, do not give them any liquids...they will aspirate it. A diabetic that is on insulin should ALWAYS CARRY Glucagon. Cake frosting, for example, is a good thing to use. Just put it into the sides of their mouth (not a whole lot) and wait until they regain consciousness. Diabetic people need to carry that with them at all times. As a diabetic, I have a tube of cake frosting in my pickup, my house, school, etc. If someone is passed out and don't get sugar into their brain and everywhere within minutes, they can die. If your friend gets low blood sugar a lot, it is probably from poorly managed diabetes. Because even on the shots (I am on the insulin pump), you shouldn't get low BG (blood glucose/sugar) all the time. My lows were more frequent on the shots. As an EMT and a diabetic, I have gained so much knowledge about this type of stuff. I don't know everything, but I try to help people out with what they want to know.

First off, you should NEVER assume that because a person has passed out, that low blood sugar was the cause.

If you are not trained to deal with emergency situations, call 911 and let them handle it. Untrained people who attempt to help others can cause more harm than good.

If you were to come across a person who is uncounscious, your FIRST response should be to call 911. I can't express how important this is. You can then check for vital signs. In fact, the 911 operator will instruct you on what to do...you need to listen closely and follow his/her directions to the letter. Do exactly as you are instructed when you are told to do it. Answer all questions you are asked. If you don't know an answer, then say that you don't know.

You should NEVER place ANYTHING in the mouth of a person who is unconscious. That person could aspirate, vomit, have a seizure...all of which can lead to life threatening complications. If a hypoglycemic person is unconscious, standard protocol calls for IV glucose...NOT oral glucose. Only EMS can perform this...another excellent reason why calling 911 is critical. The use of Glucagon is fine but as an EMT myself, I would not give it to an unconscious person. Glucagon can cause vomiting and if a person is unconscious, they may aspirate and choke. IV glucose or an IV drip of D50 is much better. Also, IV access is a great thing to have...in case of complications which might require the use of IV medications.

NEVER assume anything. Loss of consciousness has a number of causes. Because your question asks "if you find someone", then I want to assume that means that you do not know the person and know nothing about their medical history. See what I mean? You could have meant someone close to you...but because the way your initial question is phrased, it appears that you are talking about anyone...a complete stranger that you have never seen before. The same principle applies when you encounter a medical situation. You don't know what the causes are and you don't know what effects your "treatment" could have. THAT is why you need to let the professionals handle it.

Finally, let me say that if this person is someone close to you, if they do pass out from hypoglycemia, your first reaction should still be to call 911.
