How to prevent low blood sugar?

I don't have diabetes, but I occassionally have bouts of low blood sugar when I eat meals a bit late, and I feel very weak and hungry. I know the immediate treatment for low blood sugar is to eat/drink something with a high sugar content to elevate your glucose levels, but apparently in daily life one is supposed to avoid real sugary food/drinks. Why is that? Why is it so important to have one time but not in general? Is sugar, for a person subject to hypoglycemic attacks, a good thing or a bad thing?

Sugar is only an assistance for someone whose level has dropped dangerously low and whose body is unable to appropriately regulate blood sugar. Introducing sugar-rich substances to the body causes the blood sugar to soar back up long enough to avoid certain damage, but then something must be done to sustain a normal level.

For the rest of us, preventing sugar drops in the first place, makes more sense than confusing the body by letting levels drop, zoom up with sugar, and eventually crash again.

Eat frequent small, healthy meals or have healthy snacks between meals to avoid feeling weak.

As for whether sugary food/drinks are good or bad--overindulging in high sugar items is BAD for anyone. An occasional treat is okay as long as your body can properly digest the treat. High-sugar drinks/foods/tablets used to treat a sugar drop are a form of medicinal intervention. It is a GOOD thing to do for that person at that time, but does not mean we all need to do it all the time--just like any medical procedure.

Frequent small meals should help maintain. Sugar is not the best answer for a quick pick up. Protein and carbs are the best answer, it gives you a more stable peak. Just keep a check on things, as someone with hypoglycemia will convert to a diabetic in later years. Maintain a well balanced diet and it will help in the long run

Hi,
I have problems with low blood sugar and try to eat 5 or more little meals a day of a healthy balanced diet, I am under weight not over weight. I don't have a diet high in sugar but if i start to feel light headed, my feet are turning purple, my fingers start to tingle, i'm becoming lethargic and wobbly i know the only thing that will stop my fall into oblivion is sugar. I don't care how it comes, straight from the packet or mixed with water, if i wait too long i can't think how to swallow and i will pass out. As I sit here my feet are starting to turn purple and I know i havent eated enough, sugar is not something i would reach for yet. Something high in carbs like pasta which has a slow release of sugar or even a piece of fuit high in natural sugar is what I need.

If your diet has not had sufficient levels of natural slow release sugars then your blood sugar level will drop, this can creep up on you or hit you all of a sudden. When this happens sugar is my best friend, it allows me the time to get the food i need into my system, with out it I sink into a black hole. Some people say they get very thirsty or very hungry but for me it is the opposite. I can feel my hands are starting to get numb and my brain is struggling to old my thoghts, its time to eat some sugar.
