Recently found out that I have low blood sugar, and I'm CRAVING sweets!? |
I had blood work taken and found out that I have slightly low blood sugar. My doctor suggested that I make an appointment with a nutritionist and have her explain to me what types of foods i should be eating and when to eat them. You have recieved some really good answers. Low BGL (blood glucose level) can be dangerous if you are a diabetic. If not it is really a big pain in the ****. There are two types of carbs Simple and complex. Simple are fast acting carbs that will bring you BLG up but won't keep it up. Complex are slow acting but keep your BGL up. For example OJ is simple. Will bring your BGL up but won't sustain it. Whereas Wholemeal bread won't bring it up quickly but will sustain it. Protiens are a really important part of a hypoglycaemics' diet, they take longer for the body to break down into useful glucose. A good rule I teach is: Carb(simple and complex) + Protien = GOOD BGL. Carbs! Web MD well usually when its low u need to weigh out weather or not you eat healthy foods so it comes out even, to much sweets will make it sky rocket. my mom always told me that your body will crave things that you need, for instance, when i get a craving for meat, my protein is probaly low. so you shouldnt deny those craving because you can get sick so what you should do is probaly try to get some of those glucose candies. read the directions they should help. eat small regular meals 4-5 times a day nothing too sugary. when my blood sugar drops, I get dizzy and shakey I eat 2 ressee cups, and 5 minutes it cleared up. Start out with eating a healthy diet. This means three good meals a day, and a couple small snacks. I also have hypoglycemia which is low blood sugar. I have found the best way to control my blood sugar is to eat more frequently during the day and to try to eat more protein. Protein takes longer to break down and it goes into your bloodstream slower so you don't get the sugar rushes and then bottom out again. Like for breakfast I will eat a granola bar but put a spoon full of peanut butter on it. I snack on mixed nuts or protein bars. Try to avoid real starchy foods because they turn to sugar in your bloodstream like sweets and can cause the bottoming out also. Following a diabetic diet will also help control your blood sugar levels. You can find a copy of this at the American Diabetes website. Eat 4-6 small meals a day. Eat the sugarfree puddings, cookies, gelatin and candy. Also drink sugar free drinks. I have it too. If I drink regular soda or eat regular desserts I feel better for all of 30 minutes till my sugar drops again and then I pass out. There are hypoglycemic diets you can find online. I'm so glad I live in Canada where we have a universal healthcare system. As for your predicament, all foods contain sugar, especially fruits, bananas and raisins topping the list. So add fruits and vegetables to your diet |
