Wow is this normal.. low blood sugar?

yesterday i only had an apple for breakfast. apparently it wasnt enough bc my blood sugar dropped bout an hour before lunch. i started shaking some and my face got pale. i was told today by my friends that i walked into class looking real ill and pale face, and i was crying. i came into class and layed my head down and felt dizzy. next thing i remember is my teacher trying to get me up and trying to get my to lay down on the floor, but i was told that i didnt want to move and i was confused and couldnt answer anyones questions. i was just crying, confused, shaky, and dizzy. finally my teacher like picked me up and layed me on the floor and went to get a pepsi and some peanut butter crackers. i finally ate them, and i felt somewhat better. when i came out of it, i had tears on my face and everyone was around me, and i do remember being confused cause i didnt know what just happened since i was laying on the ground. was that just low blood sugar? could i of passed out? also...

if you pass out does that mean you have to go to the hospital, since your unconscious you cant eat anything with sugar in it, so would you have to go to the hospital, or do you wake back up in a few seconds? and is it possible for your blood sugar to drop really low and eating something with sugar in it not raise it because its already so low. i would just like to know more about it, bc i dont ever want to end up in the hospital with low blood sugar. i was just in a rush yesterday and thought an apple would tide me over until lunch. and is it normal to cry or be confused with low blood sugar? i really dont know why i was crying..?

It really does sound like low blood sugar. and no, you don't have to go to the hospital if your sugar goes low, and yes, you could have passed out. The symptoms you talked about are classic hypoglycemia[low blood sugar].
What you do need to do is make sure you get enough calories to get through the day, or you will find yourself back on the floor. It could get worse, some people who have these symptoms become totally irrational, and actually fight off the people who are trying to help.
And if you do pass out, you have to have immediate treatment. The rescue squad/paramedics can help, or you have to go to the hospital. They will give you glucose into a vein to bring you out of passing out.
You didn't say if you have been diagnosed with diabetes or hypoglycemia, but it is time to go find out, if you have not. See the doctor, tell him/her what happened, and let them order the proper tests. If left untreated, diabetes can be a killer. And hypoglycemia is no picnic either, I've had that one all my life, and I feel crummy the rest of the day after I have had an episode. This can happen to people who are dieting too strenuously, too.
The trick is when you have the low blood sugar, is to eat or drink something before you pass out, some juice or something sugary. Then you follow it with some protein, so you don't hve the symptoms again right away.
Again, if you have not already, go see a doctor, so you can get a diagnosis and the correct treatments.

Thanks, voter for the best answer. Report It

that all sounds pretty normal for low blood sugar - especially if it has not happened before and you were scared.

Have you been diagnosed with hypoglycemia or diabetes? If not you may want to get checked.

If have gotten checked and are sure you do not have either of those - it could have been an isolated incident. In that case, simply make sure you eat properly and it should not happen again.

You didn't mention if you have diabetes type 1 or type 2, I'm guessing type one since you mentioned school but forgive me for assuming. Regardless, your symptoms sound like hypoglycemia or even a hypoglycemic coma. Both are very serious, as is diabetes and the management of the disease. A hypoglycemic coma usually occurs when the blood sugars are less than 40 mg/dl (being diabetic I'm sure you are familiar with your normal values). Normal blood sugar is approximately 70-110 mg/dl depending on what text book you look at. Here is a website, hopefully it will help you understanding hypoglycemia and maybe determine if this is what you went through: http://diabetes.niddk.nih.gov/dm/pubs/hy...
Take care of yourself.

That is what happens to people who don't eat breakfast for one reason or another. They always think, later, I can eat later!

Your teacher was wrong not to call the medics to come get you!! She should have had your little A** hauled off to the hospital ER.

It is very very dangerous to let your sugar get that low. You could just as easily have gone into a coma and lost the entire semester!

Yep, I have been there and nearly done that. My sister was driving her car when she crashed like that!! With her kids in it. Our doctor kept telling us that we were just "dizzy redheads"!!!

I bet you didn't eat dinner the night before this episode either did you?

Now are you scared enough to go to the doctor for a complete physical? You should be!! You need to ask for blood draw for HbA1c. And since we can't be sure, you should also ask for Glucose Tolerance Test. This will tell you and the doctor how your bod handles sugar!! Yes, it is very very important!!!

You need to learn how to manage your diabetes better; I'm no expert in nutrition but you should see one and learn how to plan your meals, but in general you should include more starchy foods, e.g. cereals such as corn flakes, whole meal bread which release sugar slowly.

You need to learn to recognise the signs that a hypo is coming on; heart starts to race, sweating, hunger dizziness, sleepiness, confusion and difficulty speaking. As soon as you start to feel any of these you should take a sugary fizzy drink such as Pepsi - diet Pepsi is no good! This should prevent the hypo developing by raising your sugar levels.

Eat balanced meals at regular times.
