Older Seniors going into long term care?

I know of a 96 year old that will soon be going into a long term care home and she has been with her son and family for quite sometime and now can't take care of herself and she needs special care (to many falls at home cuz her legs are strong enought anymore) and she is very stubborn old lady. Any one have the same problems and how did they arrive at settling her in and how long did it take for him/her to settle in? Any comments? From all over please

she probably won't "settle in" if she's going into a nursing home. most residents who enter nursing homes begin a cognitive decline as soon as they get there. they get depressed that they aren't at home with their families and loved ones, they get embarrassed that other people have to do things for them, and they get angry at the thought of being dumped somewhere with 24 hour supervision. if its a nice facility and she makes friends (if she is capable of making friends) she may get used to it, but will probably not be happy and well adjusted with the system. thats why so many states are trying to push home health services to visit seniors in their homes, to keep them out of costly nursing facilities and to help them maintain a quality of life by being comfortable in their surroundings. try activities with the lady. music is always a plus (her music, not yours! try downloading stuff off the internet from the 1930s and 1940s, unfortnatley thats the only way to get that type of music unless your willing to spend a fortune). also, manicures and hairdos make the time go by faster. take her out for special day trips and picnics as often as possible. VISIT. above all, its going to be a difficult time for family and patient to adjust to, and it probably will never become something she is happy with, but hopefully will recognize that there is no other choice at this point.

they will never settle in anywhere if home is what they know. i have had the experience of two women in my life that have passed from cancer and have cared for them, my mother and mother-in-law. until they are ready to go!!!!! they aren't. bless you for what you are doing and keep up the good work. communication if possible is a great asset.

She won't stop falling in the nursing home. They are short staffed and don't get the care they need. Most are horrible places and if you can get someone to care for them at home please do it.Many are verbally and physically abused. They don't get half fed.Bad Place
