If I get denied long term & short term insurance at work does that mean I will not qualify anywhere else? |
I have had type 1 diabetes now for 16 years wilth no complications and have only been hospitalized once in 6 years and that was when I had my son!! I take good care of myself and only go to the doctor for my diabetes exams and for taking birth control. I have went for miscellaneous stuff like allergy problems, etc. For the most part I take care of myself. Was I denied long term & short insurance for the simple fact I have diabetes? Is that fair? I only wanted this insurance in case I got in some unforeseen illness or accident and couldn't work because I have a 21 month old child to think of. I am on an insulin pump and the diabetes doctor tells me all the time how good I take care of myself. My primary care physician says the same. They were the two doctor's numbers listed on the from I had to fill out. Will I always be denied?? If I ever get disabled and can't work for a year will I be covered any other way. Can I get insurance somewhere else? Any suggestions?? Contact your states dept of social services to see what laws protect you. There are plenty of them out there. The problem usually lies in the people that broker insurance for your employers (the little known go-between that connects your employer to the insurance companies) It varies from state to state, but in general, the act that you describe is very much illegal-it is discrimination-and your employer or the insurance company do not know what is going on. It is VERY complicated, but take a few minutes to contact the state health dept. on this. It goes on too often and these middlemen/women get rich off of selecting who to insure. keep on applying-give one doctor number out unless they want more(don't give out to much information) tell them only what they want Not at all. When starting a new position, it was my understanding that you automatically qualify for both - it is only if you say no, then change your mind that they deny you. no,in fact you can go and get other types of ins. if you need more to cover your problem.
