Once partially lost, does short term memory ever return at all?

Difficulties after surgery led to an induced coma for approximatly a month. A few months afterwards I realized that my short term memory was a lot worse than it had been when I entered surgery. I am not a youngster and I believe that my memory was at about the right point for my age and life style.
Now I have much greater problems retaining short term memories and converting short term memory to long term. I am under care by a neuropsyc, a good one. He says I might get better with brain exercises. Is this true or false in your experience?

Don't worry about experience.... What do you think, is it true or false?

I am just a computer person (not a medical one) but my life does put me in a unique situation to answer that question even though I am only 31.

My job requires me to memorize ip addresses (like 192.168.15.15 or something) for about 30 minutes while I fix the computer and then forget them.. I used to remember these numbers for weeks until I got sick.

I began having back problems and, although I never missed a day of work, I had a three year coaster ride that included surgeries, pain meds (big ones) and etc.. I got off of all of that a year ago and notice that my memory was shot to the point that my wife would tell me a phone number and I would forget it as I dialed with just 7 digits..

I downloaded a few "brain training" games like the ones on the nintendo ds or like some of the ones online and have finally gotten to where my memory is coming back like it was.

The point is that my mind (not my physical brain) was damaged by stress\life altering events and probably the drugs too (even though I NEVER abused them, 3 years is hard on the body) but my brain was able to begin to recover..

Given that, I would say that unless you suffered some sort of physical assault on your brain (like a stroke or damage or something) that absolutely.. You brain can be trained.
