Will living in New York City for a year have serious adverse affects on my health?

After college, I want to go to New York City to attend the Institute of Culinary Education and the Natural Gourmet Institute. I would be in NYC for about a year. I've done alot of research of NYC, and discovered that the air is so bad there that it causes genetic mutations in fetuses (as seen in the NY Times). Will living in New York City for a year affect my health very badly?

I also have had problems in the past with bronchitis, and I have really bad allergies...

Oh and by the way I am mainly talking about the air quality's affects on my health

Any place that has to grade the Air Quality on a daily basis, is NOT a place to take a pair of lungs... but you should survive a year if you go to a knowledgable allergist and plan for a few of the triggers that you can anticipate meeting in a huge smog laden city. and take precations to protect yourself DAILY, like checking the quality report, wearing masks if needed, etc... after all, isn't your health pretty important when working in the culinary arts?

I don't think so, its only a year and a lot of people live there their whole life.

You're kidding, right? My brother has lived there for 11 years and is fine.
