How to prevent getting STD's when possibly living with them?

I am a student and I'm going to be leaving home to university. I'm going to stay in a place in which three other people will live with me (dorms) and we share bathroom, kitchen and living room. I don't know if they have any STD's, but just to be on the safe side, I'm going to presume that they do.

What can I do to help protect myself against STD's (especially life long ones like herpes) if you're only living with people who may or may not have STD's?

PS: don't say condoms and safe sex... I'm not sleeping with them, I'm only living with them.

Thanks

You answered your own question in your P.S.
Unless you have sex or close physical contact such as "making out" with someone you are not at risk for contracting and STD.
The only STD's that are possibly passed from shared living quarters are parasitic things such as scabies, crabs, pubic lice etc. But, keep in mind if someone had these things they would be very uncomfortable and would treat an infection such as this ASAP, thus you would no longer be vulnerable once they were treated.
In all honesty, no disrespect intended, I would strongly encourage you to spend some time educating yourself on STD's and sexual health. I believe in doing so you'd answer many of your own questions and give yourself some reassurance. Food for thought, with herpes alone 1 in 5 Americans has genital herpes--if people got it from living with someone/casual contact wouldn't everyone have it? That's why it's an STD afterall.

STD, "Sexually Transmitted Disease". Meaning they are transmitted through sexual contact.

You along with the millions of other people who share living quarters with other, shoudl not be fearful of contracting an STD unless you are having sexual contact with them.

Other then wiping down your toilet seats and cleaning your bathtub regularly..you dont have much to worry about..oh and DON"T share towels....those things are not contagious that way.....sex would be the way to get it.
