Do you have any advice on living with Type 2 diabetes?

A friend of mine has just been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, non insulin dependent. She has asked her GP to refer her to a dietician for some advice on what to eat and what to avoid, as she has overcome an eating disorder and is very conscientious about following advice now, but his response was "You don't need advice, thousands of people have this condition, just deal with it". She lives in a small village and there are no other GPs in the practice. I'm worried about her as she is taking his refusal rather hard - I'm wondering if anyone has any practical advice on actually living with the condition (rather than advice about dealing with the GP, which, though useful, would probably not get through to her at this stage) Many thanks in advance for any serious response.

One thing I missed out - we're in the UK - I don't know if this makes a difference to the level of service which can be expected as, of course, we're not paying for treatment as its on the NHS.....

Tell your friend to go to the store and get a glucometer. They can range from inexpensive to real expensive but most have mail in rebates which make the meter virtually free. Any brand is good and the simpler the operation the better.Have her test her blood sugar once a day in the morning before she eats (fasting blood sugar, a good indicator of control). The normal range is 80-120, anywhere within that range is good. Most new kits come with a 10 day supply of everything and you can use the lancet (pricker, the thing with the needle on it) up to 4 times before it starts to dull. Plus supplies can be bought over the counter.

Foods to avoid: Quick sugars, candy, anything with high fructose corn syrup, anything covered with sugar or sugary glaze, sugary cookies, table sugar, etc you get the idea

Foods in moderation: fresh fruits and fruit juices (some are very high in fruit sugar and some of the juices have high fructose corn syrup added), pies and cakes (small portions are good)

Foods allowed: Pastas, rice, beans, meats, cereals ( hot cereals, not flavored-cold cereals, not sugar coated or flavored), juices (citrus, cranberry, lite or no sugar added),applesauce (no sugar added), vegetables (fresh or canned), etc.

Have your friend call the local hospital and ask for the dietician. Have her explain the situation and take her advice. If she needs to make an appointment then do it.

She must take a proactive attitude and get all the information she can. She can also go to the library and get books on diabetic diets and cooking. As her friend look up American Diabetic Associan on the web, they have a site for recipes and other information that will be helpful. Good Luck!

My wife has this. The doc wanted her to take a pill that cost 125 bucks a month...well, that is WAY out of our price range. She goes without and deals with it and is fine. Actually, i would commend him for not pushing pills.

Common sense would be for her to just watch what she eats.

Type 2 diabetes is not that difficult to deal with. It simply requires a bit of restructuring of your lifestyle. You have to watch what you eat, manage your weight, and exercise regularly. I've composed a helpful webpage to get folks started on what I've found to be a relatively simple method of controlling blood sugar:
