What are liver spots and why do we get them?

Regarding liver spots:
1. Liver spots, or age spots, are unrelated to liver function.
2. Liver spots are caused by increased pigmentation. They are caused by aging, exposure to sun/UV rays, and often by unknown causes.
3. They occur mostly after age 40. They occur on the backs of the hands, on the forearms, shoulder, face, and forehead, areas of highest sun exposure.
4. They are not skin cancer. They do not turn into skin cancer. They can, however, obscure (hide) signs of skin cancer.
5. They may be treated with bleaching-type lotions or creams. "Freezing" therapy (cryotherapy) or laser therapy can be used to remove them.

Obviously, if a "liver spot" suddenly changes in appearance it may not be a "liver spot" but skin cancer. Look for sudden color change, sudden irregular edges, bleeding, swelling, etc. and see a physician if you are concerned.
