My mother has cirrhosis of the liver and I was wondering does it affect the mental health at all ? |
Her mental health hasn't been "correct " for quite awhile now and she is still a very heavy drinker, probably at least a 12 pack a day if not double that. Thank you to any one thay may be able to help with this question. For example she went to jail today and she thinks she is in the hospital. It has been proven that people with chronic alcoholism develop a wide range of brain structural and neuro-psychological abnormalities. When people drink that much they are not in their right mind. Also when some people has a horrible illness it can make their mind not right.Imagine how you would live with yourself knowing you have a horrible illness that will result in death.I`m not sure if her illness will cause her not to be in her right mind but she does have to endure alot and a 12 pack a day is not helping her think the right way. If she has been an alcoholic for a long time that will effect her brain functioning. She could have had a mental illness first and then started drinking to deal with it. At this time your mother is not in touch with reality if she thinks she is somewhere else then where she really is. Try to get her some help at a mental health facility, one that also treats her substance abuse. She has some serious medical and mental problems and needs help and medication. I know going to a mental hospital sounds scary and cruel but it is not. The doctors that can help her the best work there, they can prescribe medications that will help her function better. Her liver disease will kill her if she does not stop drinking and gets medical help. You cannot live without a functioning liver. Your mom needs serious help, talk to any medical professionals you know, anyone at alcoholics anonymous, call a psychiatric facility in your area and ask questions. Call the hospital and ask to talk to someone about your problem. Call her health insurance company or the health department for your state. Don't let this go or your mom could die. She may be experiencing DT's (detox) because she hasn't had alcohol in awhile. It is very serious and you should make sure that the medical staff at the Jail knows she is an alcoholic because she needs medical attention ASAP (it can be a matter of life and death seriously). Depending on how bad her liver function is, yes she has toxins building up in her system (including her brain) and this will affect her mental status. First I'd like to say how sorry I am about your circumstances. There are many factors that could possibly be contributing to your mother's confusion. Of course the most obvious is the alcohol itself.Cirrosis of the liver can potenitally affect cognitive function over time. As the liver deteriorates it cannot adequately filter out toxins so as they build up in the body they can contribute to confusion. However, long term, chronic alcoholism slowly kills off brain cells, which never regenerate and this too may be contributing to her confusion. The only way to know for sure is to ask her physician as there may also be other health factors you may be unaware of and if she's as confused as you say she is, I'm sure her physician would discuss her condition with you as you appear to be her next of kin. I dont know what to say about the drinking, you would have heard it all before. As for her mental health she should be worried about cirrhosis of the liver, what she should be doing is giving up the alcohol. She could be drinking to drown her sorrows and its making her illness worse,I think your mother needs to see her doctor pronto as its not very fair on the rest of the family,S(he) could set up a meeting with a shrink(sorry my spelling is atrocious)i dont mean that in a bad way but your mum really needs serious help before she kills herself with the alcohol.Maybe you could talk to her doctor on her behalf,my heart goes out to you and im sorry i cant be there to give you hug or support...............................Li... |
