Is cirrhosis of the liver hereditary? |
Is cirrhosis of the liver hereditary? I don't think that the disease is hereditary but the possibility of getting it due to the liver may be hereditary. cirrhosis of the liver hereditary? i'm not a doctor, but i guess you could say that one of the causes of cirrhosis is alcoholism, and alcoholism is definitely hereditary. i know a family who have lost grandfather, mother, aunt, and probably another aunt who is on the way, thru alcoholism, and 2 of them had cirrhosis. Cirrhosis is a condition of the liver which refers to the pathological changes of normal tissue to scarring and fibrosis with nodules. Cirrhosis itself is not hereditary. There are numerous hereditary diseases that cause cirrhosis such as hemachromatosis--increase iron in the blood, Wilson's disease--increase in cooper, some of the glycogen storage disease also can be a factor. Chronic alcohol and hepatits will also contribute to cirrhosis. I think some families have it more prevalently, but if you take care of yourself you can prevent it. It is reversible. Cirrhosis is basically a term for scaring of the liver. It can be caused by many things other than alcoholism. Diabetes, Hepatitis, or a disease called NASH, which stands for Non- Alcoholic Steatorrhoeic Hepatosis or Non-Alcoholic-Fatty-Liver-Disease (NAFLD). NASH , and NEFLD can be caused by high cholesterol, and triglycerides which are also hereditary. My mother has primary billary cirrhois. No one knows the exact cause of it. It is not caused by alcohol or diet. It is an autoimmune disease. My brothers and I have to have our liver enzymes checked twice a year to make sure we aren't developing it. There is no cure for PBC and even if you have a transplant the transplanted liver could develop PBC. no, but alcholism is so you could be next in line if you don't take it easy. |
