What are the physical consequences of cirrhosis of the liver? |
What are the physical consequences of cirrhosis of the liver? * exhaustion death Death Death, and a very unpleasant one. My brother's liver exploded through his chest and spattered all over my mother's living room. Eventually death. My grandfather died at 61 from it. He was a full blown alcholic too. my grandmother had this. She kept getting weaker and weaker and finally died in her sleep. The only saving grace was that she said she wasn't in any pain, just weak and tired. In simple terms, cirrhosis means that healthy liver tissue is being replaced by fatty non-functional tissue. The liver has over 200 recognized functions, including detoxifying poisons, storing glucose, making blood proteins. All of these jobs suffer in the diseased liver. Physically the enlarged liver does not circulated blood the way it should and fluid backs up. This can cause fluid build up in the abdomen (ascites), large swollen veins in the esophagus (varices), and around the rectum (hemorrhoids). This is only a very simplified explanation, I suggest on of the medical web sites for more details. Good luck. It is more likely for people who has cirrhosis of the liver to develop into liver cancer which might be fatal. |
