Knee Ligament injury... How long till fully healed?!?

I changed the direction of my leg to fast during football, and ended up pulling a ligement in my knee. How long will i be out for? I want it to be fully healed before i start again.

Thanks..x

Sorry to hear you've hurt your knee!
How long you will be out really depends on which ligament you have injured and how badly.
You don't say you went to A+E so I will assume it's not too severe an injury.
If it's a ligament at the side of your knee that you've hurt (the medial (inside) or lateral (outside) collateral ligaments) you should be good to go in about 6 weeks.
If it's your cruciate ligament you have damaged, providing it's not completely torn, you should be ok in about 8 - 12 weeks after doing a lot of strengthening and balance work. However, some people still have problems with their knee after doing this rehabilitation and require surgery to repair their ligament. But this would be quite a severe injury and normally you would have gone straight to A+E as its sometimes diagnosed as a broken leg before x-rays can be taken.
I'll outline a simple rehab programme for a medial collateral injury for you as I think that's the most likely thing you have done.
Week 1: Rest and ice your knee. Keep it elevated and use a compression bandage when not elevated if there is swelling.
Week 2 -4: Gradually increase exercise. Cycling or front crawl swimming and then gentle jogging are ok and begin doing balance exercises. Start standing on a stable surface then move onto something a bit more wobbly, like a bed mattress. Try doing it with your eyes open and then your eyes closed.
Week 4 + 5: Begin strengthening hamstrings and quadriceps gradually increasing resistance. Begin more sport specific drills such a running then sprinting. Start working on control of the knee during lunges and step ups and step downs - focus on keeping your knee over your second toe as you bend the knee. Begin agility drills such as running in different directions, jumping over cones etc always focussing on quality rather than quantity. By the end of the week return to training.
Week 6: Return to matches.

However, if your injury is not so serious you will be able to progress more quickly. But generally, only return to sports once your control of the knee has returned, it is fully stable, strength of both legs is equal and you can balance on the injured leg with eyes closed for 30 seconds.

Hope that helps and wasn't too difficult to understand!

My grandpa did nearly the same thing, but in baseball about 50 years ago, he still has walking problems because of it. It's never fully healed.

can take a year to heal. ligaments are the slowest healing parts of the human body as they don't get a lot of blood flow to them. take it easy.

U will be out for about 8 weeks

go to he doctor for a check up, the doctor will be able to inform you in more detail. and maybe even help recovery!

im not a doctor so i wouldnt know, but i wish you all the best!
