Knee Ligament Torn - What is happening to my leg?

I twisted my knee almost 3 years ago. I knew i tore a ligament, my leg swelled badly minutes after the incident. I could not bend my legs properly for the next 2 months.

For 1 whole year i could not kick a ball, At the end of the first year i started to play soccer again, but my knee felt weak, and i re-injured or re-twisted my knee for over 20 times for the next year.

After 3 years, i found that my knee became stronger, and i have not been getting any knee injuries for the past 7 months. I play soccer almost one, twice a week.

Can you tell me what is happening?

How can my knee now get stronger? Not as good as it was before the injury, but better, as in little or no injuries yet for the past 7 months.

the sooner that you go back to play the more susceptible you are to re-injure yourself. Once you tear a ligament it is never the same unless you get it surgically taken care of. But maybe after a while of not playing your body has learned to accommodate for the instability in your knee. The muscles crossing your joint could have become stronger and learned where they need to be stronger. Plus, your joint capsule and ligaments do have some healing capacity, it's really slow and not going to be complete, but the more time for them to heal the better....

It could be alot of things....Maybe the ACL? You'll never know for sure unless you get it evaluated...
