Ankle ligament damage?


I tore my ankle ligaments about 7 months ago mucking around playing rounders. I literally heard them tear. My ankle never healed properly. It was an inversion injury so the outside of my ankle was damaged. It is still swollen and cant deal with long distance running on it. I can hardly survive a soccer match without pain. I had physiotherapy sessions initially but never did any strength work. So I presume my ankle is weak. I was playing football on it last week and as I was rolling my foot over the ball the ligaments on the inside of my ankle stretched. I heard them and felt them go. There was a bit of bruising and swelling but nothing big. Could the original injury have weakened my whole ankle? And should I get my dad to book me physiotherapy?

Yes go back to PT. Grade III sprains (with torn ligaments) compromises the stability of the ankle joint. Not only does that joint have to support you while to stand and walk but your putting excess demand on a weakened structure by playing soccer and running on it.

PT initially will not do strengthening because its not appropriate at the time. But go back to them and they'll help you get back to full activity with strengthening, balance, and agility/sport specific drills.
