Surgery or Cast for Torn Ligament in Foot?

I rolled my ankle 10 weeks ago. I went to the ER, they took XRays and said it was a sprain. I went to a local orthopedic surgeon who sent me to get an MRI. He said it also looked like a sprain and saw no significant damage on the MRI. At week 9 I still have swelling and pain and ask for another MRI. At this point they see a ligament tear and only partial healing. I have a Dr.'s appt tomo but do you think he will recommend surgery this far from the original injury date?

Also should I get a second opinion and see a diff. Dr since there has already been 1 misdiagnosis?

ALWAYS GET A 2ND OPINION. I torn my Achilles tendon. The ambulance paramedics said it was a sprain. The doctor at the spa said it was a sprain. I went to a 24 hr emergency care where a little foreign doctor said my Achilles was torn and I should go to a hospital. I called my family doctor the next day who said to see how it acted for a couple of days then come in. Two days later he sent me to a specialist who agreed the tendon was torn and separated but all four doctors there said I should not be able to walk (which I was and they had me walk around while saying it supposed to be impossible. The specialist said surgery. By now I agreed , Worked out find. I'll never play for the NFL (never did or wanted to) but I ski, motocross, etc. Hope you get better.

I rolled my ankle (both sides) 22 mo. ago and still have problems (pain). It would swell up on/off for almost a year. Unfortunately I would have been better off breaking it with a faster healing time. I saw 3 different doctors w/diff. diagnosis with the last recommending surgery. However, I opted for 3 mo. of physcial therapy which made a huge difference. Did the ortho dr. give you a soft boot or anything to support it? If not I'd try that. But definitely before you go for surgery do your homework or get another opinion. I found this product after going thru PT which I wish I'd had in the beginning. It might be worth looking into, especially if you have surgery which might also require physical therapy afterwards. If I did surgery, I was looking at 6-8 wks in a walking boot & then another 6-8 wks of PT. Best Wishes!
