Whats life support?

when someone is involved in an automobile accident there on life support while being an comma.

Life support is having a machine breathe oxygen into your lungs and take off carbon dioxide when you can not because the part of the brain that controls that function is no longer working due to an injury, or the coma could be medically induced to allow the brain time to heal on it's own.

Patients in comas must have nutrition for their bodies to continue to function. They either have a central line inserted into an artery called a "Picc line", or a tube placed into the stomach either through the nose or directly into the stomach so that a feeding formula can be administered.

IV lines are placed in veins to administer electrolytes to maintain homeostasis and keep the patient from dehydrating. IV's are also used as a route for medications that are needed since the person is unconscious and can not take anything by mouth.

Basic support needed to sustain life is given in this instance.

Hope this answers your question.

Take care my friend.

They will usually have a machine breathing for them through a tube and probally have a feeding tube inserted in addition to an iv.

When a machine(ventilator) is used to breathe for the patient via a tube that goes thru the mouth, nose or surgical opening in the neck (trach).

in general, anything that supports life or keeps someone alive is life support. It might be a breathing ventilator for someone who doesn't breath well for themselves or a stomach/feeding tube for someone who can't swallow/eat.
