What do you think of artificial life support? Do you think people should be kept alive on a ventilator.......

if there is evidence of brain death just because the family can't bare to let the person go?

Anyone that has ever had to let go of a loved one knows how difficult it can be, but sometimes you have to make that decision. I had to let my mom go that way, she was 85 and in bad health for sometime, If she could have been given quality life then I would have not made that choice. But she knew she was sick, and I held her hand and spoke softly to her as she was passing, about meeting up with some of her children that had already passed, as well as my dad. I know she would have wanted it that way.
My son is currently on dialysis, waiting for a kidney transplant, unfortunately I cannot give him one of mine, To all you people out there, that has to make that choice after brain death, please think about saving another life with organ donation. You can save several people with just one person donating their organs.
My entire family knows not to put me on a machine to extend my life, unless it's only to harvest my organs in order to save someone else. There is no pain like watching your child go thru needing a transplant, and seeing someone else to selfish to donate their loved ones organs or their own for that matter.
Please think about how you would feel, if you or your child or your spouse needed a transplant.
As for my son, he will not be kept on life support, That's his wish, and I will honor him that way.

If there's no hope I say make the bed available for someone who can use it.

what would you do if one of your loved ones was in this situation? its a hard call to make...we all dont want to lose a loved one....its an individual call ......good luck

This question shows why everyone should have a health will (I forget the name of it) Which basically states what your wishes are if you are in a comatose condition. You can get them at your local hospital. You fill them out and name a person whom you trust to carry out your wishes. it has to be signed in front of 2 witnesses The hospital has to abide by your wishes.
If there is evidence of brain death. I see no reason for anyone to be kept alive on a ventilator.but that is just my opinion

This is a matter of personal choice. EVERYONE should discuss this with their doctor and/or their pastor and especially their family members. If you haven't made out a living will (which covers your health care decisions), do so now. Make your wishes known now while you can. If the person you are writing about has not made his/her wishes known, it's time to make some hard decisions. If the doctor has diagnosed the patient as brain dead with no chance of regaining what he once had, would you want him to live out his life in his present state? Would you want his family members to agonize over him - maybe for years.

The document that "curiously me" was referring to is a Living Will.

It's very important for an individual to decide what he wants before something like this comes up. He should then make out a living will and let his family know of his wishes.

My Pop was already gone, but he was on machines to keep him alive. He had told us he didn't want to be kept alive artificially, but he didn't have a living will. I had to fight like hell against the doctors and lawyer of his hospital to get what he wanted. That of course on top of our family grieving.

It's got to be the individuals decision. If Pop wanted to be kept alive, I'd have been fighting to keep him on machines.
