If a person were in a serious car accident could they end up on life support when they go to the hospital.? |
just out of curiosity. what other ways would cause it? like cancer or something? I have always wondered what situation can be so bad for a person when they can't breathe on their own. how could they end up on long term life support? It would depend on the extent of their injuries. If you're worried about yourself, you can sign a living will. I did before my last operation, because I wouldn't want to live (exist) like that. Accidents, strokes, pneumonia, COPD, severe heart attack, major surgery. Any of these things could cause a person to be on life support. THat is why it is important to have advance directives filled out as to what you want done should this happen to you. It depends on the injury or injuries they sustain in the accident. For example, if there was some damage to the brain or spinal cord, there is a chance that they would need life support. Cancer may not cause it at that moment, but if they hurt their lungs, then they would need a respirator, wouldn't they? I'm no doctor, but I hope that answers your question. My mother was put on a respirator when her heart gave out on her because of Congestive Heart Failure. One moment she was fine, the next she couldnt breathe on her own, even with an oxygen mask on. She was kept in an induced coma while the tube was down her throat and only when the doctors thought she could breathe on her own, did she get taken off it, about 6 days later. I'm sure any life-threatening situation, whether it be cancer or a car accident, if it is serious enough, can cause a person to be on life support if they are in critical condition.... Absolutely. Car accidents leave a lot of people on life support. Cancer can also lead to it. Life support is simply someone who couldn't live on their own without the help of medical equipment. Basically if a person's vital organs can't do their job, they are put on life support to compensate. Yes they could. |
