Question about Head Lice...?

A family member is coming to stay with us in one week (for vacation) and he just told me that his baby got head lice from daycare. He doesn't think that it is a big deal. My kids have never had lice so i don't know how to react. His two kids will be sleeping on our futon and surely be on our couch. It is Monday and he has treated his baby and they are going to seal up their bedding for 48hours to get rid of it. They are NOT treating their other child and so therefore I am worried. They will be here Sunday.

I have been told that our pets can not get the head lice... so that is good. But I am really worried about them staying here... my neice suggested using Tea Tree Shampoo while they are here and for a while after to ward off any lice on my kids.

So my question is... what is the gestation period for lice. If they fail to kill them all or their other child gets it.. will they know before they come here?

Also... what are the chances that they will pass it on here? I know I am probably just freaking out... but I just need to know.

Do I really have anything to worry about?

if he treats them an uses the lice comb to take out any possible eggs then u shouldnt have anything to worry about, a baby would be real easy to find the lice. the other kids , man i dont know they should be treated also, tell him so.

Tell your family member that he and his family may NOT come into your home unless both children have been treated for the lice. Even if both visiting children have been treated, you'll still need to check every member of both families. Lice can be very resistant to treatments.

oh god, I had lice twice, I got it from school mates, if your children have any contact with the child they have a chance of getting lice, since they can jump and climb. Before the kids come over the children should take a bath and have thier parents carefully look through their hair, they usually hide in the back, toward the neck where the hair is thickest and darkest. Buy a lice kit from the store that comes with the special comb, to comb out any lice left in the hair, also don't let the kids share pillows hats, brushes, or anything the kids may lay on, or place thier heads against.

Lice eggs hatch within 1 to 2 weeks after they're laid. Adult lice and nymphs (baby lice). The adult louse is no bigger than a sesame seed and is brownish tan (although lice may look darker on people with dark hair). Nymphs are smaller and become adult lice about 7 days after they hatch. Most lice feed on blood about every 4 to 6 hours, but they can survive up to 3 days off the scalp.Medicated lice treatments can usually kill the lice and nits, but it may take a few days for the itching to stop. Your child's doctor may recommend repeating treatment in 7 to 10 days to make sure all the nits have been killed, to avoid any risk of reinfestation.

If your child is 2 years old or under, you should not use medicated lice treatments. You'll need to remove the nits and lice by hand.In your efforts to get rid of the bugs, there are some things you shouldn't do. Some don'ts of head lice treatment include:

* Don't use a hair dryer on your child's hair after applying any of the currently available scalp treatments, because some contain flammable ingredients.
* Don't use a cream rinse or shampoo/conditioner combination before applying lice medication.
* Don't wash your child's hair for 1 to 2 days after using a medicated treatment.
* Don't use sprays or hire a pest control company to try to get rid of the lice, as they can be harmful.
* Don't use the same medication more than three times on one person. If it doesn't seem to be working, your child's doctor may recommend another medication.
* Don't use more than one head lice medication at a time.

hope that helped for anything else check out http://www.kidshealth.org/parent/infecti...

Once the lice are killed a follow up treatment is required in ten days to kill the lice that have hatched since treatment doesn't affect the eggs. If a person is very lucky and has treated all of the bedding and anything else a carrier has had their heads in contact with they may have all been killed, but it takes only one pregnant louse to re infest so it can be a vicious cycle. You might want to search (head lice) and read some of the sites that come up. One is: http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/headlice.htm...
It sounds like they will be visiting about the time for a second treatment. Just the mention of head lice makes my head itch, I don't envy your predicament. ...Good Luck...
