My girlfriend is overweight, how should I be about it...?

My girlfriend was bulimic in school, she was tiny and ill looking. So now she works hard to eat three meals a day and works to keep her mind healthy as well.

She is vegetarian and reasonably overweight, she has issues with her weight in her mind (thinks her perfect weight is 43kg, at 5'3"), for health reasons she needs to lose some weight.

I am worried about how to get her aiming for a safe weight and not wanting to go further.

Yes, she wants to be a healthy weight, and is almost fit and trains a good amount, messing with food is the last thing we want to do.

She has just given up alcohol and caffeine (chocolate). I think this may reflect the health problems of same sex couples, they say lesbians are often overweight.

I am not pushing her to lose weight, I want her mind healthy before her body. And anyways she looks mighty fine with her weight on, but she needs to be healthy.

Also starts work as an accountant soon, I am worried this will not help her weight.

So any ideas..?

She can still eat three meals a day, the portions just need to be appropriate.

She's probably eating way too much pasta and not enough lean protein - maybe you can help her cook some "fake meat" like boca burgers and tofu/soy stuff.

But you're right, she will be in danger of reverting back to her eating disorder if she tries to diet...

So make it all about having fun learning new recipes, eating healthy, and exercising together.

If you guys have time maybe you should start cooking lower calories meals, www.cookinglight.com has lots of meal suggestions.

My husband and I try and do more active things after work and on the weekends. Little stuff adds up (walking the dog, parking further in a parking lot).

It sounds like you have been together for a while and because you aren't like a lot of people on her (complaining about their partners weight) you obviously love her and she probably knows that. If you explain your reasons to her and really express how you feel she probably won't be offended and it will be easier for her if you two do it together. And emphasis that it is for health reasons, not for vanity reasons. :) Good luck!!

If she's working on her mind then perhaps you should speak to her Dr. He will know if now is a good time to bring this up or not, as well as the best way to approach it as to not set her back. Beyond that just keep in mind that her body starved for so long it is probably now in famine mode, it is storing everything it can just in case there is another drought. Be patient, and love her.

dump her and find a hot girl
