Leg pain... blood clot?

I've been having some pains in my right leg. I've been reading causes and it says blood clots can be caused by sitting for long periods and being on the pill.. well I am on the pill and I work in front of a computer everyday so I do sit for long periods of time.

Am I maybe overreacting? Should I see my doctor? I don't have any swelling or redness, just an odd pain. What else could this be? I have not had any injuries that would cause leg pain.

Although it may seem unlikely that you have a blood clot, it is definately possible. I have to disagree with the nurse that posted previously...being on the pill IS a serious risk factor for blood clots with or without other contributing factors.

Symptoms occur in the affected leg when a clot obstructs blood flow and causes inflammation. Symptoms may include the following:

Swelling
Gradual onset of pain
Redness
Warm to touch
Worsening leg pain when bending the foot
Leg cramps, especially at night
Bluish or whitish discoloration of skin
Almost 30-50% of individuals have no complaints.

If the pain persists - better to be safe than sorry - go see your doctor.

Without the swelling and tell tale redness and SEVERE leg pain you most likely don't have a blood clot. WIthout examining you doing x-rays there is no way anyone on here can have a clue what is causing your pain.

Well, a blood clot is a possiblity, but I think it's way down there on the list of them. As you are sitting long periods of time, I'd say it's more likely you are putting pressure against the nerve and blood supply and that's what's behind it. Blood clots in the leg cause swelling and tenderness in the area of the clot. Try shifting around in your seat periodically, and watching where the seat edge is hitting the back of the legs. Uncross your legs, move them around as well. Notice if you tend to sit "right bun" predominately, which would put more pressure on the sciatic nerve and can cause pain. It's more likely you problem is positional, not from phlebitis. Unless you are also over 40, smoke, are overweight, and borderline diabetic, just being on the pill isn't really a significant factor. If shifting and short exercise doesn't help, then you might visit the doctor. For what it's worth, most problems are pretty simple and not caused by the worst scenario things.

I would suggest going to your doctor just to get it checked out. He'll probably use a Doppler to listen to your pulse on your leg (I just had this done a couple of days ago for a suspected blood clot).

Since there isn't any swelling or redness (there may also be extra heat emanating from the area if it's a clot), you're probably fine. Visiting the doctor will ease your mind though.

From now on when you're working you should take a couple steps to help the blood flow in your legs:

1. Elevate your feet on a stool under your desk (you may not be able to do this at your work, but it would be helpful).
2. Frequently rotate your feet and stretch your calves by pointing your toes up (learned this during pregnancy in Lamaze class because pregnant women are prone to blood clots).

It really could be any number of things as simple as a calcium deficiency to a clot or blockage. Never feel silly or over cautious when it comes to your health. You know what is normal and when something new is going on. Your body is telling you something so make the appointment and go see the doctor. For some reason we think we have to be visibly sick to seek a doctors care. When in reality, they are available for any and all health issues. I am assuming that you have health insurance as you said "see my doctor". If that is the case, than certainly spend the $10-40 co-pay for the peace of mind. If not than consider a clinic or on-line medical site like www.justanswer.com, where actual doctors talk to you and help you get to the bottom of it, for approx. $15.00.

Feel better~all the best

1st For the bllood clot , consult ur doctor and take medicines to dissolve it before it gets lodged in lung or brain causing serious adverse effects. that is very very urgent. It is the 1st thing you have to do.

The pill can cause clotting in certain types of women. If you smoke, you are adding to your leg problems. If you do smoke, drop the habit NOW.

Elevate your legs above your head throughout the day and walk frequently. Take breaks more often and walk around the building or outside.

Take garlic pills to thin your blood and watch your blood pressure.

Check you family history for stroke and blood clotting histories. It may be genetic in your case.
