Syndromes and Disorders?

Why does our society feel the need to label everything as a syndrome or disorder?
restless legs?
Attention problems in children (I dont know a single species where a child/cub etc... can pay attention to anything for more than a minute
Hyperactive children (all children/cubs etc are excited and hyperactive, they are curious and playful)
Someone please explain this, and also why they feel the need to shove pills down our throat for everything?
Thanks :)

I couldnt agree any more with you.and whats the story with personality disorders???there are many many well documented personalitys but to call them disorders is ridiculous.and with kids aswell i agree.kids will be kids.this sounds like the thing of conspiracys but the psychiatric drug companies love coming up with new "disorders" cause they will make more money.20 years ago they wasnt half the "disorders" there are today in the DSM.its not cause there are new ones being found.its cause more and more often they are labelling things that are normal as "disorders" just cause not everyone has these personality TRAITS.anything to make an extra few quid.the psychiatric drug companies are at the top when it comes to making money.second only to internet companies i believe.they recently have come up with a new tablet to help "social phobia".imagine that.theyre labelling shyness a disorder.i think its mad.people just love putting names on things.people cant bear to have something exist and not to have a name for it.unfortunetly a lot of the time this goes too far

pills keep kids quiet and adults blissfully stupid

I used to think the same way! And then a friend of mine became a 3rd grade teacher, and she explained to me how HUGE a difference there really is between active kids and actual ADHD (attention deficit hyperactive disorder). She taught a child who literally would shred his worksheets, notebooks to pieces when he had to stay in one place, not because he was a bad kid, but because physiologically he had too much of some chemicals in his brain. When he was on medication, he was reduced to the level of activity of the other 8 year olds in his class. Also, studies have been done that actually have found biochemical abnormalities in the children labelled that way.
However, you have a point. it is way overdiagnosed, and some teachers use the label as a way to get rid of disorderly kids in their classes.
Perhaps with advancing science we will create lab techniques to correctly diagnose the kids who actually have this problem.

Something like restless legs is labelled as a disorder or a syndrome because people suffer on account of the condition. I have restless legs at times, and although the sensation isn't awful, it's bad enough.
Most children can focus if they choose. How do you think children learn a language? They're very interested in communicating, as so much depends on it. On the other hand it's unrealisitic to think that a child can spend more than 20 minutes at any given task without tiring and wanting to do something else. If a child can't even spend 5 minutes on a task, this isn't normal. It's also a severe hindrance in learning. How quickly can you learn long division if the most amount of time you can spend on it is only five minutes?
You should see videos of hyperactive children in a classroom. Their behavior is extremely disruptive and very hard to control. That's why medications enter the picture. If everyone had private tutors perhaps these children could get away without taking meds, but barring this very expensive remedy, meds can at least provide one element of control

Thank the Pharmaceutical Companies for that. All the drug lobbyists running around Washington are also to blame.

humans arent the same as bears or lions and

it does seem like society is labeling everything its called "medicalization" but as time tells they need to be labeled
in the early times alcoholism and pregnancy weren't really considered as medical things but later it was better to "label" them [they were just drunken bas****s and a natural process of life]

hyper activity in my opinion is similar to these, it is a medical condition risking a persons health

I both agree and disagree with you in this matter. The problem with the 'labels' is not that they are there, but that too many people believe that everyone 'fits' into just one 'labeled box' ... Yes, all children do have 'attention deficit problems' but some are so hampered as to seem 'retarded' when just taking a 'pill' will slow down their thinking so that they can 'achieve' something. Hyperactivity is also 'normal' but again, in some cases, it is so 'wild' that it takes a pill to get the child 'calm enough' to be able to sit still and learn. And what about the children with both Attention deficit and hyperactivity ... or the opposite child who has so MUCH attention that a parent must physically touch or 'shake' the child to get it to stop doing whatever and do something 'more important' ... like EAT A MEAL? Doctors DO NOT just listen to the parents 'complain' and hand out prescriptions like lollipops ... they do 'tests' on the child to determine EXACTLY what, if anything is 'going wrong' and then write a prescription that may or may not 'help' ... and if the pill doesn't help, they test again to find out if another medication may help, or therapy, or whatever.
I have PTSD ... and I always 'assumed' that I got this through my 'career' ... I'm a psychologist who worked as a 'flying squad member' ... I went 'on site' for threatened suicide, hostages taken, etc. It was only through 'intensive therapy' by a good counselor, that I found out I had 'repressed' a memory from my infancy ... I had been sexually abused at the age of one year. My mother and grandparents tried to 'hide this' from me because they didn't want it to 'harm me' ... but that 'hiding' DID harm me, until I realized what had happened, and suddenly EVERYTHING that wasn't quite 'right' in my life seemed to 'make real sense' to me ... and because of that, I no longer must take anti-depressants on and off, I no longer get 'seriously depressed' ... etc.
Some people would say that YOU probably have ADHD, because those are the 'disorders' you 'focused on' in your question. THAT thinking is 'wrong' ... but that doesn't mean that you don't have a 'disorder' of some sort ... nor does it mean that you do have one. If you are in a 'situation' where you feel that a doctor wants to 'shove pills down your throat' for something, and that possibly you would be better off with therapy or just being 'left alone as you are' ... and the ONLY WAY you can 'get help' is to HELP YOURSELF. If you don't like what your doctor is 'doing' then SPEAK TO HIS SUPERIOR. IF that doesn't work, call the state agency responsible for his 'license' to practice medicine. Whether you have 'restless legs' or ADHD or are 'perfectly normal' (although I seriously doubt any of us are perfectly normal ... we all have our little 'weirdnesses') and if you aren't getting what you feel is 'proper treatment' then COMPLAIN until something is done about it. Complain reasonably, and you will get a 'reasonable hearing' by the people who monitor your doctor/therapist ... and YOU must 'participate fully' or you'll have to 'stop complaining' and 'take your medicine' whether it's good for you or not.
