Does my family member have a psychological disorder?

My 60 yr old mother does the following things more and more over the last 10 to 15 years:

1. Talks constantly, jumping from topic to topic and making very hard-headed assertions based on limited or no knowledge. She seems literally incapable of controlling what comes out of her mouth, and will even make racist statements in public.

2. Exhibits high bursts of energy where she seemingly can't sit down and just relax.

3. Has to constantly organize items, e.g. will move every drink glass to the sink if it is left out for more than 5 minutes (in other words, if she sees it, she can't help but move it)

4. Constantly plans unimportant details, can't deal with ANY UNCERTAINTY

5. Constantly nervous, bites nails, shakes legs, picks skin

Are these symptoms of a psychological disorder? I would have said bipolar or manic but this is a constant set of behaviors that does not fluctuate from day to day or month to month. No apparent depressive episodes. Please help.

All these people, all over the planet, seriously striving to stop eating, smoking, drinking, gambling, swearing, grouching etc. Don't they understand? The only way to give something up is to take something else up. If you embrace the alternative enthusiastically enough, your arms will neither have the space nor the desire to carry what they used to hold. If your resolution involves a sacrifice, you won't keep it for long. It's got to be based on inspiration. What excites you? What's worth striving for?

it could be a few different things talk to her about it and have her talk to her dr. if she wont do that then you talk to her dr

These symptoms suugest mania and obssessive-compulsive behavior in your mother. It certainly would be in her best interest to have a thorough physical exam, at which point that physician will probably refer her to a psychiatrist for a thorough psychiatric evaluation.

Good luck with everything.
