What to do about disorders...?

Okay, I've already been told that I suffer from depression and avoidant personality disorder. I've also just learned that I most likely also have paranoid, borderline, and dependent personality disorders. I don't know what I'm going to do, because pretty soon I won't have any insurance. I'm pretty sure I need to be taking medication and to be going to therapy, but I don't know how I'll do it. What should I do?

Depression can be treated with medication. The rest is all about therapy. DBT is supposed to be good for borderlines. CBT for a lot of other disorders.

If your insurance is running out, check with your county gov. They run mental health programs and can help you get services.

There are self-help support groups through the National Mental Health Assn . Call 1 (800) 969-6642. Or call
1 (800) 789-2647 for Mental Health Info. Or ask the social workers associated with the hospital where your doctor/therapist works!

There are probably local support groups like Recovery, Anon., for people with emotional problems, in your area, if you check into them.

Good luck!

Omg, I so relate to you & your "disorders" A few years ago, I was diagnosed w/ multiple disorders of the variety you've mentioned. First! don't despair, there is hope & recovery. Second, don't get passive in your care, ie., give feed back on your meds & don't accept poo-pooing from the doc--if you don't like the med, insist on an alternative, there are bunches to choose from & every one reacts differently to them, If you don't like your therapist, for any reason, get--insist-- on another, Don't accept as a response "Well, I never heard of that (reaction) before." (thereby implying that whatever you've shared is invalidated) Third, don't give up--take breaks when you need them, but always remember you can pick up your healing when you're ready--sometimes we need to catch our breath. Be strong, and allow yourself to be weak (from time to time) Have faith in yourself! You will survive, you will be happy (and sad & a bunch of other emotions & that's all OK!), and you will succeed! Laugh! Laugh a lot. Laugh at yourself, at life, at the irony of it all. Give yourself permission....

A couple of links that might help are

http://www.nami.org/

and

http://www.emotionsanonymous.org/

Emotions Anonymous is a 12-step program and many who use it rely at least partially on understanding a higher power, but even the interactions with people may be helpful regardless of your spiritual beliefs or a lack of them. Some may use the power of the group as a higher power.

Good luck.
