My granddaughter is allergic to rubber/latex. What would be an alternative to rubber handles on her bike.?

MY GRAND-DAUGHTER HAS EXCEMA. SHE IS ALLERGY TO PEANUT BUTTER,EGGS AND SOY AS WELL AS THE RUBBER,GLUE AND LATEX PRODUCTS. I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY IMPUT IN ANY AREAS. WE CAN CONTROL THE FOOD ALLERGIES PRETTY GOOD BUT THE CONTACT WITH THE OTHER ITEMS IS THE PROBLEM.

Possibly some stiched leather grips available at a motorcycle shop.

Maybe foam.

That would be very hard. I would suggest meeting with a Allgery Specialist and she what the bikeshop has. An Allergy Specialist will know best! Good luck!
Hope this helps!

leather or plastic

I would put cloth around the latex handles. Or put plastic over them. My mother is extrmemly allergic to latex and she works in a hospital where latex is used a lot. She also has this problem. She often puts something around the latex so it won't cause a skin problem.

See if someone can custom make leather handles.

Wow, that's a tough one. Best I could suggest is have her wear little cloth gloves maybe, especially when bike riding.

TRY WOOD HANDLES

You could probably wrap leather boot laces around the ends of the handlebars and that would act as suitable handles

cork

You can put the leather grips on the handle bars, or you could invest in some cute biker gloves for her!

you can get the material for wrapping tennis rackets at any wal-mart. it just glues right on

Some bikes have foam handles you might want to look for them.. Or try some gloves.. If that doesn't work then try to get one with plastic handles.

You can purchase leather and make covers. But then you still have the problem with the tires.

Get some Leather grips for motorcyles, They have fringe types or plain leather grips. Good luck on the other things

I have seen some mafe out of a type of high impact plastic and even foam. Perhaps some of those would help

I'm pretty sure if you go to a bike shop they will suggest an alternative. Either that use leather strips wrapped round the handlebars, or maybe the tape for repairing tennis rackets....

the best alternative is cotton gloves , there's different and cool designed styles , they have some light textured fabric , in foley's or wal mart,, hope this can help ,, or get some fabric handles at home depot u can buy something that fits in the bike

She could wrap her handle bars in the same foam that you wrap pipes in. (In the winter) They come in different sizes , so she could move them from one bike to another as she grows. My daughter has many allergies also and she uses these sometimes on her scooter. They are easy to take off and replace if soiled, also. They work as protection, too. Hope this helps.

umm try using plastic handles or leather handles well grips or something that wont trigger the allergy

That's rough! Sensitivity to petroleum products runs in my family too.

Try leather, wood, or canvas. Or gloves: There are some pretty cool-looking ones out there I'm sure your grandaughter will enjoy.

Good luck!

sponge like handle covers

i have an allergy to latex as well, although mine is caused from being born with spina-bifida. please feel free to e-mail me at any time , I would say it's safe tp put plastic grips on her bike, if you can find them. good luck, Mark-Mrklcoac2002@yahoo.com

Ace bandage makes a wrap that sticks to itself after you are done wrapping. You could use that. Some places even have it in different colors. Also if she ever has to go into the hospital or even when she goes to school make sure they are aware of her allergy to the rubber, glue and latex products. My son & his wife just had a baby and they are both allergic to latex and they put a big notice on the door so that the nurses wouldn't use anything with latex...
