Ultralase laser eye surgery at 18 years old?

Hi,
My eyesight is -1.25 in both eyes (I have trouble reading things in the distance)
How does laser eye surgery work? does it burn a layer off the eye? and if so, what makes this layer form?
I don't really know alot about eyes or laser eye surgery but if anyone has had laser eye surgery, how benifical was it and what do they do? ie how does the surgery work?
And after the surgery, will the eyes get worse again.
If anyone has any knowlege on laser eye surgery please let me know,
thanks x

18 is the basic minimum age by law in many places.
But it's important to know your Rx is stable, so that the final result is likely to last: really, no change in at least the previous two years.

For a very large percentage of people it works out fine, but that does not mean it is risk-free.
(and I've seen some people with seriously ruined corneas, unable to get good vison even with contacts or glasses.)

There's lots of information at the Food and Drug Administration site:
Ultralase have put a sample consent form on-line as a .pdf, so you can see what you'd be agreeing to:

See http://healthguide.howstuffworks.com/las... In a nutshell, it reshapes the cornea of the eye, i.e. the film over the front of the eye that does a lot of work bending incoming light into the eye correctly. Afaik, the eyes shouldn't get worse again, except the normal effects of age on eyesight, since the cornea won't reshape itself.

Had it done and its fantastic i now have 20/20 vision in both eyes - was like you before. I had it done 7 years ago and no they dont go 'bad' again.

I dont think they will do it when your 18 though - you will have to check that out because you have not finished growing and your eyes are stil developing. You will have to make sure they are not still changing - if you wear glasses and or contact lenses then they will want to see 2 years or more prescriptions that show your eyes have not changed, otherwise g鈧琫t them checked and maybe wait a year or two until they have stabalised.
I had it done at optimax in Manchester! Fantastic life changing miracle!!! was about 拢750 for both eyes - yes bargain too. best thing i ever did!! The laser was only on each eye for about 15 seconds - couldn't feel a thing. I stayed in dark room for the evening n let them heal then wore sunglasses for a week cos they were sensitive to light - then wham! 20/20 vision!! Would recommend it 100% and will send my children who wear glasses as soon as they're old enough. My sister is getting it done and my brother is considering it now too - I had it done 7 years ago now and not had a bit of bother since :D You do need to research the procedure and the risks though and don't enter into it blind - excuse the pun, but i found the pro's far outweighed the cons. Also research the surgeon- i emailed and spoke to mine many times before committing myself and also spoke to some of his patients. Optimax is a great company and has many clinics depending where you live. If ya want any more info please ask me or log onto their website. Hope this helps. Good luck!

i know alot about eyes because mine are -8 and -8.5. laser surgery is surgery and therefore i would only recomend ot for someone who needs it. your eysight isnt really that bad. how laser surgery works is that it cuts little insisions on the side of you eye to change the shape of the eye. the fun thing about the surgery is that you are awake for the entire thing. it doesnt hurt but still.
you should be able to correct it the first time with surgery but being such a young age your eyes may change due to growth or intense reading(college) so it is really your choice.
If this wasnt enough, go ask an eye doctor

Yes, it goes bad after about 10 years, give or a take a few years. They basically take a layer off your eye, and reshape your cornea back to normal 20/20 vision. It does come with some risks but they are fairly uncommon. It doesn't hurt but a few days after you get it done, your activites are restricted so they can heal. My mom had it done about 9 years ago. She went from -13 to 20/20 and she recently had to get glasses again, but her vision is no where near as bad as it was. It is definately worth it so you don't have to deal with the hassle of contacts and glasses, especially if your vision leaves you blind without them.

I had laser eye surgery done several years ago for astigmatism and nearsightedness. I wanted to see things farther away and pass my drivers license vision exam without having a corrective lenses restriction. I still have 20/20 vision. As I get older, (I am much older than you), I need magnifiers to see print closer than an arms length away.

The procudure itself did not hurt. You are given valium to relax you and drops in your eyes to numb them. The sounds reminded me of the dentist office. It only takes seconds for each eye.

There are many factors to consider for the eye surgery, you may want to check http://laser-eye-surgery-advice.com a web site that explains the procedure.

Whatever you decide, good luck to you.
