Laser Eye surgery: Where to start and how to go about getting it?

I am really considering getting laser eye surgery. Does anyone know of any potential side affects i might encounter? My health insurance kicks in sometime this month so i would like as much information as possible. It would be nice not to have to deal with glasses and even better not to have to deal with contacts (something i don't even want to fool with!)

My concern is that I have had two people who got it and their eyesight was worse.

First and foremost you need to make sure your insurance will cover this surgery. Most do not. Make sure you have an excellent surgeon and with normal eye problems you shouldn't have any side effects beyond the normal healing process.

I had laser surgery for my eyes in 2000 and still see very well. It is not at 20/20 anymore, but well enough where I don't need glasses or contacts. Insurances do not usually cover laser surgery because it is a cosmetic surgery. You need to research all of the doctors, and find who has had the most successful results. The downfall to laser surgery, is that you will most likely need reading glasses when you get older. also you will need glasses when driving at night to reduce glare from the street lights, and when they reflect of the rain. Not everyone is a candidate for this type of surgery. Your need of glasses will be halted only for a short period of time. After 10 years, you will need corrective lenses. This is not a permanent solution, and risks are very high. One slight mishap, you will lose your sight permanently.
